Position:  Finance Officer: Durban

One Year – Fixed Term Contract

Established in 1999 as an environmental justice NGO, Biowatch works with small-holder farmers, other civil society organisations and government to ensure that people have control over their food, agricultural processes and resources, and other natural resources, within a bio-diverse, agroecological and sustainable system.

Biowatch South Africa holds the fiduciary responsibility for the regional Seed and Knowledge Initiative (SKI).  The primary aim of SKI is to revive and enhance traditional seeds and knowledge systems and to deepen understanding about their functioning, within the context of supportive agricultural, cultural and ecological practices.

Purpose of the role

To support the Finance and Operations Manager in the following areas;

Processing payments (capturing payments, ensuring documentation in order, managing petty cash and bank reconciliations), creditors and invoicing, management reporting (preparing monthly reports for finance committee on expenses and expenditure), preparation of funder reports and project budgets, administer and manage the petty cash and recons for the Mtubatuba Office and work on site when required. Preparation of VAT Returns and other statutory documents (NPO Directorate, WCA, EMP – payroll, Tax return, Tax clearance). Provide assistance with audits (Maintain the Fixed Asset Register and depreciation and the Durban office inventory and preparation of files and documents for the annual and project specific audits), Process staff claims monthly, credit card reconciliations, staff training on financial policies and procedures and expense reports for Durban Office.

Essential requirements for the Finance Officer:

  • BComm Accounting/ Equivalent
  • Minimum of 3yrs experience in Accounting field
  • Non-Profit Organisations Experience
  • Accounting package (Pastel)
  • English Proficiency
  • Code 8 drivers’ licence
