COOPI started its operations in Ethiopia in 1995. In 2020, COOPI is implementing 15 projects in the sectors of WaSH, Food Security, Emergency Response and Energy in the 3 regions of Oromia, Afar and Somali. We promote access to safe water and efficient irrigation; hygiene and sanitation for rural populations working in communities, schools and health centers.

We are also responding to emergencies including forced displacements, floods and recently desert locusts. Our organisation promotes agriculture, livestock and sustainable employment. COOPI sustain the coffee value chain and increase long lasting youths employment.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties

  • Ensures technical leadership and support, with the aim of intensifying the impacts of the project in terms of quality and responsibility in food safety and livelihood;
  • Facilitates the coherence of the activities of the food safety and livelihood sector carried out within the framework of the projects, within the broader intervention of COOPI in Ethiopia;
  • Ensures the monitoring of the project in the food security and livelihood component;
  • Manages the food safety team of the project;
  • Mobilizes, in coordination with the Country Administrator, the project resources;
  • Maintains and manages relations with the donor, stakeholders, NGOs and Agencies operating in the project area.

Technical Leadership

  • Ensures coordination between government, the project and AICS partners for the definition of the project strategy;
  • Shares knowledge and skills related to the food safety and livelihood sector within the technical work team;
  • Ensures that the activities are carried out in compliance with the Logical Framework and the indicators;
  • Responds to internal requests from COOPI on the interests of the donor and local partners;
  • Ensures the necessary visibility of the interventions of this project in national and regional platforms, the sector clusters and on the ground.

Other Responsibilities

  • Any other task necessary for the good and timely implementation of the projects, identified in agreement with AICS and COOPI.

Requirements

Education/Experiences

  • Agriculture related degree (MSc.);
  • Proficiency in English, mastering of Somali or Italian language will be an asset;
  • Proven professional knowledge and training in food security – livelihood – agronomy (min. 5 years);
  • Experience in coordinating food security – livelihood activities on the field in development and / or emergency contexts;
  • Solid knowledge of issues transversal to the food safety – livelihood sector (including Gender; Environment; Vulnerable Groups);
  • Analytical ability of identify needs, gaps and opportunities in relation to project activities;
  • Proven experience of capacity building and facilitation of multi-stakeholder processes.

We are an independent Italian NGO founded in Milan by Father Vincenzo Barbieri on April 15 1965.

For 50 years we have been dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and to supporting populations affected by wars, socio-economic crises or natural disasters in their path to recovery and sustainable development, by making use of the professionalism of local and international operators, and through our partnerships with public and private bodies and civil society organizations.

Today we are present in 24 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, with 150 humanitarian projects reaching almost 2,400,000 people. Since 2006 we have been providing food, education, health and protection to thousands of children in 8 countries through our child sponsorship programs.

Since 1965 we have helped 100 million people, through 1,600 projects in 63 countries, employing 4,500 expatriate and 55,000 local operators.

COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale is an Italian Non-governmental Organization for Cooperation and Development, founded by Father Vincenzo Barbieri in 1965. Over the last 50 years COOPI has aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty and supporting population affected by wars, socio-economic crisis or disasters in order to encourage resilience and sustainable development. COOPI is currently involved in 24 countries in Africa, Middle East Latin America and Caribbean with 150 humanitarian projects that reach nearly 2 million and 400 thousand people.

It stands at the international level for: - the care of maternal and child malnutrition; - food security interventions; - protection of war victims (women, girls subjected to abuses by armed groups and child soldiers); - the promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples; - the introduction of renewable energy; - disaster risk reduction.

Every project aims to protect women, children and environment. The financial statement is certified by an audit company. 2014 final budget is more than € 30 million and 600 thousand, 93% of which was used for interventions in the Southern World and 7% to fund the Organization. The funds come mainly from institutional donors, above all from the European Commission. Since 2006 it has also been involved in the Child Sponsorship Programme in 8 countries, providing food, education, health and protection to 2,712 children. COOPI employs 125 expatriates and 3,800 local operators. In Italy it employs 50 employees, 15 co-workers and 653 volunteers. From 1965 to 2015, COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale has helped 100 million people in 63 Countries, by employing 55,000 local workers in 1,600 projects.
