GIZ- Biodiversity and Forestry Programme

As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit a Forestry Expert for the Biodiversity and Forest programme as specified below.

Position:                        Forestry Expert

Place of Work:              Nonu Woreda / Ilu Babor Zone, Oromia

Required Candidate:    One

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of this post has the main responsibility for the:

  • Communication between the programme coordination and the field (Nono Woreda);
  • Cooperation with local authorities, OFWE and Ethio Wetland;
  • Synergy between forestry and other supply chains (coffee, honey, spices);
  • Technical support of the programme according to needs and skills;

Tasks

Communication between the programme coordination and the field (Nonu Sale)

  • To be aware of what is done at national and international level in relation to forest management and mainly participative forest management and bring these issues to the field
  • To be aware of the programme approaches, plans and strategies and to support them within the partner organization;
  • To follow up and coordinate activities with the local authorities (OFWE, OFCA, EFCCC, etc.) and the programme itself
  • To identify the strategies of all stakeholders in PFM and NTFP, and put it in line with coffee as a sustainable delivery chain
  • To support the activities implemented by the project

Cooperation with local authorities and Ethio Wetlands

  • To get acquainted with other project in the field and engage in a good integration  and coordination of common activities related to forestry
  • To bring the ideas of the project “sustainable supply chains” into the projects
  • To set priorities for all kind of action from the programme side
  • To bridge Nono Woreda and other related organisations and the programme

Synergy between forestry and coffee supply chain

  • To cooperate in the strategic development of the project
  • To have good contacts with the field staff and the coordinators in Addis and Metu;
  • To have a regular presence at both, the woreda (Sale Nono) and zonal level (Ilu Ababor)

Technical support of the programme according to needs and skills

  • To advise the project and the partners in technical questions even outside of the region and on demand;
  • To take responsibility in the technical implementation of the planned activities of the project
  • To follow up and monitor the implementation of the activities in close cooperation with cooperatives
  • To be always aware of the different approaches of forestry and coffee production
  • To assess strengths and weaknesses of existing PFM groups
  • To improve the forest monitoring capacities of PFM groups

Other responsibilities

  • Support the administration of the project and ensure that the rules and regulations of GIZ are always respected.
  • Be actively involved in transversal tasks (gender, conflict management, etc.
  • Assume all other assigned tasks of the superior

Job Requirements

Qualifications required

  • Degree in Forestry, natural resource management or related subject;
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in the sector of participative forest mana­gement, general forestry, forest management, and forest landscape restoration
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in an international NGO or cooperation body or in higher education, or in an executive job;
  • Have proven communication skills;
  • Thorough experience in application of participatory approaches;
  • Good mastering of the English and Amharic language
