ROLE PURPOSE:

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) for Save the Children South Africa, the Fundraising and Communications Director (FrCD) shares in the overall responsibility for the direction and co-ordination of the organisation. The FrCD in his/her capacity is responsible for the development of a best in class fundraising function in line with the organisational strategy, and more specifically for maximizing income from individuals and corporates by inspiring and engaging people and developing long-term committed relationships. The aim is to build a cost effective, ethical and sustainable fundraising program which meets the needs of Save the Children South Africa.  The FrCD will work closely with the Advocacy, Communications & Marketing Director on matters relating to marketing and communications with donors.

Key elements of the role will include:

  • Work with the Chief Executive to develop overall medium and long-term fundraising targets for each channel (corporate, direct sales (F2F), direct response (mail, digital, TV, radio),  high net worth individuals, etc.) aligned to the overall strategic direction of the organisation
  • Develop and manage a multi-channel fundraising programme with appropriate strategies including committed giving, foundations, corporations, major gifts, events and planned giving
  • Lead and support the overall communication and branding strategy to ensure it meets the two needs of driving additional income and delivering significant improvements in the lives of children.
  • Maximising B-BBEE in line with the organisational strategy

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

As a member of the Senior Management Team, contribute to:

  • Leadership of Save The Children South Africa and support the development of an organisational culture that reflects our values, promotes accountability and high performance, encourages a team culture of learning, creativity and innovation, and frees up our people to deliver outstanding results for children and excellent customer service for our and donors and the public.
  • Help design and implement a coherent organisational structure that is consistent with best practices and appropriate to organisational needs
  • Help establish, maintain, and improve active and regular working relationships with: Save the Children International and other Save the Children Members, host government authorities, partner agencies including humanitarian and development donors, and local and international NGOs
  • Ensure Save the Children South Africa complies with local law and all Save the Children obligations
  • Ensure that all required support is provided promptly, at scale and in line with the rules and principles during emergencies, working closely with other members of the Save the Children as appropriate
  • Seek out and maintain relationships with key supporters such as thought leaders, celebrities, social media influencers, or others that can help to amplify our message or work with our teams to add strategic value

Fundraising

  • Work with the Chief Executive to develop overall medium and long-term fundraising targets for each sector (corporate and individual giving) aligned to the overall strategic direction of the organisation.
  • Develop and manage a multi-channel fundraising programme with appropriate strategies including committed giving, foundations, corporations, major gifts, events and planned giving
  • Develop B-BBEE strategy in line with Corporate strategy
  • Build solid prospect management, research and donor stewardship programs to support the growth of revenue generated fundraising
  • Oversee backend systems and processes to support all aspects of fund development; develop tools for tracking fundraising revenue and donor prospects.
  • Ensure the effective development, management and monitoring of the Department’s annual budget. Track financial and program performance through regular monthly reporting including revenue/expense and budget controls
  • Build successful long-term relationships with donors, volunteers and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent and promote Save the Children with enthusiasm and professionalism, building and strengthening relationships with key donors, funders and prospects, and the media as appropriate
  • Lead the field of fundraising and philanthropy, monitoring trends to ensure Save the Children benefits from current knowledge, resources and techniques
  • Infuse the culture of fundraising  into all Save the Children’s activities
  • Ensure Save the Children South Africa website is up to date and serves the organisation in engaging with supporters, prospects and suspects interested in our work.
  • Continuously test in order to diversify acquisition streams
  • Develop best in class donor retention and communication programs
  • Build a culture of innovation
  • Mentor future leaders and develop the capacity of the local fundraising team
  • Ensure the effective integration of fundraising, programs, communications and advocacy

Communications

  • Lead  the development & implementation of an integrated fundraising and communications strategy
  • Provide oversight for the content development and production of publications and online materials, assuring they relate to the overall fundraising and communications strategy
  • Facilitate the development and planning of innovative integrated campaigns that building the brand, drive revenue and achieve success that directly improve children’s lives.
  • Develop regular engagement activities that leverage our social media footprint in order to achieve campaigning and/or fundraising objectives
  • Ensure media trends are being monitored to seek out reactive opportunities to share our message or position ourselves as a reliable source within program areas of strategic importance (hunger, educations, humanitarian, etc)

Staff Management, Mentorship, and Development

  • Ensure appropriate staffing within fundraising function
  • Ensure that all staff understand and are able to perform their role including during emergencies
  • Manage the fundraising team; define expectations, provide leadership and technical support as needed, and evaluate direct reports regularly
  • Ensure the recruitment, training, and promotion of staff as appropriate and ensure availability of appropriate professional development opportunities for staff
  • Ensure adequate definition and segregation of duties within the FR team
  • Develop a team with a “global-mindset” that is willing to share and learn from the whole of the Save the Children family, and understands the importance of being a strong and competent internal voice for South Africa
  • Manage the performance of all staff in the fundraising team through:
    • Effective use of the Performance Management System including the establishment of clear, measureable objectives, ongoing feedback, periodic reviews and fair and unbiased evaluations;
    • Coaching, mentoring and other developmental opportunities;
    • Recognition and rewards for outstanding performance;
    • Documentation of performance that is less than satisfactory, with appropriate performance improvements/ work plans

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of eight years of fundraising, experience with proven track record within the NGO sector of at least 4 years
  • B Degree in business sciences or similar, M degree preferable.
  • Experience of development and execution of fundraising strategy including corporate sector fundraising (including experience development and application of B-BBEE strategy), mass market individual and high value donors
  • Proven track record in developing fundraising plans which lead to increased revenue. Emphasis on mass-market fundraising and securing corporate partnerships
  • Experience in implementing donor stewardship strategies
  • Ability to analyse raw data and statistics to support all fundraising decisions
  • Previous experience working with fundraising databases
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to develop, communicate and implement fundraising and related communication strategies
  • Superior competence of database & accounting software and MS Office
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage a complex and diverse workload and to work to tight deadlines
  • Ability to build a small, proactive team, motivating staff and working collaboratively with colleagues and providing support and advice as necessary
  • Willingness and ability to dramatically change work practices and hours, and work with incoming surge teams, in the event of emergencies
