The Organisation

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.

Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.

We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 80 years, and are now active in more than 70 countries.

The Opportunity

Plan International has full-fledged Country programmes in three out of four affected countries in the Lake Chad Basin. Since 2016 Plan International is coordinating and harmonizing its response to the Lake Chad crisis through the Lake Chad Programme, currently coordinated by the Lake Chad Programme Unit.  Taking into account the protracted nature of the crisis, Plan International developed a new 5-year programme strategy for the Lake Chad Region. This new Lake Chad Programme Strategy, outlining Plan International’s bold ambition to transform the life of girls and their families in the Lake Chad Region. It moves beyond a humanitarian vision towards a full spectrum programme, working at the nexus of humanitarian and development efforts to promote children’s rights and gender equality.

Under the general guidance of the Lake Chad Program Coordinator, we are looking for a Gender in Emergencies Specialist to position Plan International as NGO partner of choice for promoting gender equality and protecting girls’ rights in the Lake Chad Basin through programming and evidence-based influencing work addressing the needs of girls, adolescent girls in particular, within the Lake Chad Basin.

In addition, provide technical advice to our Country Offices in Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and the whole Lake Chad programme in ensuring Gender is incorporated in a meaningful way in to the design, implementation and monitoring of all our projects.
  • Provide gender expertise within the LC Programme for strategical analysis, gender assessments, capacity building, proposal development as well as gender-sensitive monitoring and evaluation.
  • Contribute to shape the programme vision for the Lake Chad Programme focusing on girls’ rights and gender equality in line with 100 Million reasons
  • Use the results of the Research on “Adolescent Girls in the Lake Chad Crisis” to develop programmatic guidance and to strengthen our influencing work around adolescent girls
  • Provide learning for the organisation on who to operate on the humanitarian-development nexus, achieving our purpose of advancing children’s rights and equality for girls

The Individual

In order to succeed in this challenging and varied role, you will have significant experience in planning, design and implementation of integrated humanitarian programmes.
