1. General Background

The Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa (RBWCA) with its oversight role continues to provide support to 21 countries, 15 of them with UNHCR presence, in developing and implementing the comprehensive solutions strategies for protracted situations.

2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment

(Concise and detailed description of activities, tasks and responsibilities to be undertaken, including expected travel, if applicable)

Under the supervision of the Senior Communications Officer, the Graphic Designer will work on the following:

Produce high quality graphics and digital materials to support the communications of objectives of UNHCR in West & Central Africa.

Develop original, creative, and on-trend graphic and multimedia materials for UNHCR’s external audiences.

Create graphic products that are in accordance with UNHCR brand identity, templates, and global campaign visual guidance when necessary.

Design visuals to be used on UNHCR social media channels and video production in the region.

Work closely with colleagues specializing in social media management, multimedia production and communications to design visuals to support their work.

Monitor design trends and propose innovative new approaches for visually conveying UNHCR’s messages.

Support UNHCR country offices in West & Central Africa with various graphic design needs.

Develop and maintain functional and visually appealing templates that can be used by colleagues for external-facing products.

Ensure external-facing products from the region meet quality standards and are aligned with UNHCR brand guidelines.

Support the development of brand identities for various initiatives in the region.

Complete other duties as assigned.

4. Qualifications and Experience

(List the required education, work experience, expertise and competencies of the individual contractor. The listed education and experience should correspond with the level at which the contract is offered.)

a) Education (Level and area of required and/or preferred education)

Graphic design, visual arts, multimedia production, communications or similar area of study preferred.

b) Work Experience

(List number of years and area of required work experience. Clearly distinguish between required experience and experience which could be an asset.)

4 years relevant experience in graphic design with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience in graphic design with Bachelor or equivalent or higher.

Working experience for a large organization is an asset.

c. Key Competencies

(Technical knowledge, skills, managerial competencies, or other personal competencies relevant to the performance of the assignment. Clearly distinguish between required and desired competencies)

c) Technical Knowledge

Expertise in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop or equivalent programs.

Knowledge of Adobe Premiere and/or Adobe After Effects for videos and motion graphics a plus.

Experience designing content for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok, and familiarity with requirements and technical standards of various social media platforms.

Experience with content management systems (CMS) and designing for web pages and email marketing platforms (e.g., MailChimp).

Knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Knowledge of print publication design and technical standards for printing a plus.

d) Personal Competencies:

Flexibility, organizational skills, ability to work quickly and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Demonstrated interest in issues related to forced displacement or the humanitarian field is a plus.
