Terre des hommes Foundation (Tdh), founded in 1960 and based in Lausanne, is the leading Swiss organisation for children’s aid. In 2020, Tdh reached 4.8 million children and members of their communities in 35 countries. Tdh is an independent, neutral and impartial organisation committed to bringing meaningful and lasting change to the lives of children and youth, especially to those most exposed to risks. We strive to improve their well-being and ensure the effective application of their rights as defined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other relevant human rights instruments. To make a difference, we focus on the areas of maternal and child health, children and youth migration, and access to justice. We aim to empower children and youth through active participation. We advocate for the respect of children’s rights, supporting them in voicing their needs and interests. We work in fragile and conflict settings, as well as in stable environments.

Tdh’s engagement is financed by individual and institutional support, with administrative costs kept to a minimum.

Context :

Tdh is present in Kenya since 2011. Currently Tdh is providing protection and health/nutrition services for children and families affected by migration, drought, and poverty in Korogocho informal settlement in Nairobi, in Garissa County, in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, Kalobeyei settlement and host communities.

In Garissa County, Tdh supports the Ministry of Health in providing integrated nutrition and protection services to severe malnourished children as well as pregnant and lactating women. In Korogocho informal settlements, Tdh implements early child development activities and child protection activities with a strong community-based approach aiming at decreasing violence against children and strengthening child protection mechanisms. The interventions in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, Kalobeyei settlement and host communities are focused on prevention and response to child protection needs while strengthening protection community-based mechanisms in the refugee operation and its host communities.

Responsibilities :

  • Under the supervision of the Deputy Operations Manager, he/she ensures the proper functioning of operations at the national level; as such he/she represents the Foundation in Kenya.
  • He/She directs and supervises all activities connected to the Tdh projects in his/her assignment country in line with the SP (Strategic Plan) and strategic orientations.
  • He/She represents Tdh (including legally) and promotes the entirety of its remit in the assignment country.
  • He/She demonstrates ethical and exemplary leadership to maintain the Foundation’s good reputation and leads all the delegation’s collaborators in a shared vision in compliance with the Foundation’s strategic orientations. In collaboration with the programs and expertise, he/she develops the Strategic Plan of the Delegation’s operations in compliance with the general reference framework.
  • He/She develops and guarantees the implementation of the Delegation’s Annual Operational Plans (AOPs) in compliance with the Strategic Plan and internal processes (budgetary management, HR and logistics management, quality and accountability).
  • He/She guarantees the implementation of an operational risk-management system for the Delegation.
  • He/She supervises and supports all staff attached to the Delegation.
  • He/She ensures the Delegation’s internal and external communications.
  • He/She feels accountable to the beneficiaries, collaborators, and donors.
  • He/She makes sure that his/her teams and partners have learned the security policies and the general code of conduct and comply with them at all times.
  • He/She is responsible for the security of the Tdh teams under his/her responsibility and is in charge of the security rules and the contingency plans of the country or countries under his/her responsibility.
  • Manages and assumes ultimate responsibility for the risks and access aspects of the mission.

Profile :

Education :

University degree in related field or equivalent program management and development experience at senior level;

Experience :

  • 10 years’ experience in managing humanitarian (conflict environment) and development programmes and teams;
  • Familiarity with UN, US and European donors and their rules, requirements and guidelines;
  • Experience of working with local stakeholders – demonstrated ability to collaborate with peer agencies, local government and community leaders to work effectively towards a common and agreed upon results;
  • Demonstrable experience in capacity building of partners (civil society, public and/or private sectors);
  • Africa experience is desirable

Skills & Competencies :

  • Proven abilities in all aspects of project design and implementation;
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
  • Strong team leadership qualities and high level of integrity;

Languages :

Fluency in English, French an asset

IT Knowledge :

Full proficiency with Microsoft Office Environment

Salary :

Expatriate contract under Swiss regulations between CHF 5’700.- and CHF 6’000.- net /month according to experience x 13 times, Vacancy: 25 days annual leaves local accommodation and transportation, Health insurance, accident and medical repatriation insurance, return flight.
