The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a dynamic, experienced individual to head up its influencing and advocacy work in Kenya

GAIN is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially those most vulnerable to malnutrition.
About the role
As the Influencing & Advocacy (IA) Manager, you will provide support to the Country Director in strengthening the food and nutrition influencing agenda for GAIN in Kenya amongst key actors including Government, donors, the UN, civil society including peer NGOs, the private sector and consumers.
You will coordinate advocacy for food fortification in order to improve regulatory monitoring and enforcement of and compliance with Kenya’s Food Fortification laws and standards in the context of food quality, while supporting the SUN Business Network membership platform.
This role will require managing and supporting high level stakeholder relationships with business, government, donors, UN and civil society. Role specifics include;
- Monitor, attend and engage to represent GAIN, where appropriate, in key national-level and country-level policy fora and meetings.
- Lead on external engagement with key stakeholders in government, private sector, UN, donors and civil society including academia, media, and other development practitioners; to improve support for GAIN’s mission and increase resources allocated to nutrition in Kenya
- Lead the development of the SBN Kenya strategy and 2020 workplan – aligning the existing draft strategy in Kenya with the SBN’s Logic Model, Theory of Change and where relevant, utilising National SBN tools.
- Organise technical and political level meetings between business, government, civil society, donors and UN agencies to strengthen cross-sector dialogue on nutrition and build consensus on priorities and opportunities for business and nutrition in Kenya.
- Under the guidance of the Country Director, convene and coordinate fortification Advocacy Technical Working Group (TWG) of consumer rights, health advocacy, and other civil society organisations, INGOs supporting fortification and improved nutrition in Kenya, and members of the Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Network (within each county and national level)
This is a GAIN staff position, offered on an initial fixed term period of two years.
About you
You will be an excellent communicator, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence a variety of stakeholders through a range of platforms including presentation delivery and networking events. You will need to have excellent project managements skills, utilising these to deliver outputs within tight deadlines. Experience working across sectors is essential, and you should have an existing network within the private sector that you can leverage to achieve positive outcomes for GAIN. You should have the ability to navigate the Government and donor landscape, and have a solid understanding of food fortification including industry, nutrition, and public health issues.
