Amref Health Africa, the largest African led international organization on the continent, provides training and health services to over 30 countries in Africa. Founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa to bring critical health services to remote communities, Amref Health Africa now delivers preventative, community-based health care. Reason for developing Integrated SBCC strategy

Amref Health Africa partners with the Government of Ethiopia, international NGOs and local stakeholders to implement diversified health project portfolios throughout the country focusing on three key programmatic areas: Maternal, Neonatal, Child, Adolescent and Youth Health (MNCAYH); Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and Communicable and Non-communicable diseases prevention.

Gender and health systems strengthening are cross-cutting reflected throughout the organization’s health portfolio. Our organization also engages in clinical out­reach interventions and emergency programs including nutrition and resilience building of affected communities.

This resource brings together current best practices to guide program planners and/or implementers in the design and implementation of social and behaviour change (SBCC) program. Integrated SBCC refers to SBCC programming designed to cohesively address more than one health or development issue within the same program. Typically, this involves developing a logical and unified SBCC strategy that addresses multiple topics and/or behaviors and considers how they relate or interact with one another. Examples of integrated programs include:

  • Reproductive, maternal, new-born and child health (RMNCH)
  • WASH
  • Communicable and Non Communicable disease prevention
  • Sexual reproductive health (SRHR)
  • Immunization and family planning
  • Human resources for health
  • Agriculture and nutrition
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB)

Job Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in social sciences discipline with strong background on SBCC
  • At least five years of demonstrable experience in designing and implementing of SBCC strategies
  • Experience in developing SBCC intervention packages with a focus on RMNCH, WASH and CNCD prevention
  • Strong understanding of the health sector, the Ethiopian health extension program and 
its future directions
  • Available for preparation , and facilitation of the workshop, synthesizing the workshop 
outputs, writing and consolidating comments and finalizing the report
  • Good interpersonal communication and workshop facilitation skills

Amref Health Africa (formerly the African Medical and Research Foundation) is the largest African health development non-governmental international organisation based in Africa, committed to improving health and health care in Africa.
