Context:
Background Information
The IOM Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) based in Cairo, Egypt, provides programme support and technical expertise to IOM Country Offices in the region.
The Regional Migration Health Intern supports the Regional Migration Health Specialist and Epidemiologist as well as provides technical support to the country missions in MENA to implement their migration health projects through mainstreaming migration health into national strategies and policies; building the national technical capacity to respond to health emergencies; strengthening mobility sensitive diseases surveillance system; developing regional initiatives such as UN Joint Programme; compiling, analysing and updating epidemiological data, and providing technical guidance on project management, coordination and implementation.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and the direct supervision of the Regional Migration Health Specialist at the Regional Office for MENA, the Regional Migration Health Intern will provide technical and administrative support to the Regional Migration Health Specialist.
- Provide various administrative and logistics support for the MENA regional Migration Health Department (MHD) meetings planned to take place in Cairo Egypt.
- Update the existing sets of epidemiological data compiled by the Regional Migration Health Specialist and Epidemiologist and assist them in data analysis to support the country missions for their strategic policy decision making, project development ideas, and resource mobilization.
- Compile project data collected from the country missions (e.g. the number of beneficiaries, curative services, health promotion) and assist in data analysis to support the country missions for project monitoring.
- Assist in tracking project implementation progress to support the country missions to avoid delays.
- Assist the Regional Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer in health project monitoring and evaluation including design and updating regional monitoring database, preparation and review of project background documentations, evaluation tools development, transcribing and analyzing data coordinating and scheduling evaluation field work in coordination, with project teams and reviewing evaluation reports.
- Support developing regional initiatives such as UN Joint Programme by conducting a mini survey, compiling inputs from the country missions for the proposal and budget development, refining proposal, and developing donor briefs.
- Support in reviewing project reports and proposal/concept notes based on the checklist developed by the Regional Migration Health Specialist.
- Assist with the preparation and background research for presentations, meetings, and requests for inputs from headquarters and other colleagues.
- Assist in developing and updating information sheets on the overview of the migration health programme in the region.
- Help analyze and share related thematic information (including issues, trends and data) as well as good practices with country missions, relevant colleagues and external parties.
- Assist in administrative tasks including scheduling, travel arrangements and coordination with partners.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Training Components and Learning Elements
- Exposures to a range of migration health issues throughout the MENA region in different contexts including conflict and post-conflict environments.
- Acquired knowledge on IOM’s project development and coordination as well as monitoring and evaluation approach at a regional level.
- Gained experience in supporting coordination and cooperation between various stakeholders including World Health Organization (WHO) and UNFPA and working with different colleagues at national and regional level.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
· Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution, preferably in public health, epidemiology, social science, and public administration, or an equivalent combination of relevant trainings and field experience.
Experience
· Experience in research and M&E methods, data analysis or report writing/editing.
· Experience in volunteer assignments and/or internships in international organizations as well as familiarity of migration health issues especially epidemiology an advantage.
Language
· For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Arabic and/or French is an advantage.
