Background information/Organizational Context

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is an international organization with the mandate to assist persons in need of international protection; asylum seekers; refugees; statelessness; and internally displaced persons. The UNHCR operation in Mozambique has its main office in Maputo, field office in Nampula and sub-office in Pemba. The working language in the UNHCR offices in Mozambique is English.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting research on the legal and policy framework applicable in Mozambique on a variety of topics involving refugee and internal displacement-related matters as well as on several protection analysis and key programmatic activities.
  • Support in developing capacity-building material on refugee and IDP protection.
  • Supporting the Protection Unit in the management of individual cases of UNHCR persons of concern.
  • Support in preparing briefing note, reports, dashboard sitreps (both in English and Portuguese).
  • Supporting with any other activities of the Protection unit as needed.

Minimum qualifications required

Desirable:

  • Background in refugee Law and internal displacement (desirable).
  • Previous volunteering or working experience with refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Previous experience in the legal affairs, doing legal research and drafting policy papers or briefing notes.

Required skills:

  • Fluency in English and Portuguese
  • Background in human rights

Eligibility

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.

An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Allowance

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
