Job Description

SNV with funding from the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) has been implementing an innovative project called the Sustainable Nutrition for All (SN4A) project in Uganda and Zambia since 2015. In Uganda, the project has been implemented in Kasese and Kyenjojo districts. In January 2018, the project
will enter into its 2nd phase with an expansion to kakumiro district. The project seeks to improve nutrition outcomes at household level through building capacity of local leaders to (i) trigger and maintain demand
for dietary diversity at scale (ii) inducing behavioural change at intra-household level (iii) promote innovative nutrition sensitive agriculture production (iv) Strengthening nutrition governance.

Consequently SNV seeks to enrol the skills of two Junior Advisors to contribute to the commitment of improving nutrition outcomes in the three districts of Kasese, Kyenjojo and Kakumiro. SNV requires professionals to fill in the two positions and work within a team that reports to the project manager.

The Junior advisor will be responsible for (i) building capacity of local leaders to trigger demand and lead teams to trigger and maintain demand at community level (ii) lead behavioural change campaigns and support lower level structures to spearhead behavioural change campaigns (iii) work with lower level government extension workers to provide nutrition sensitive agriculture extension services using innovative approaches (iv) strengthening sustainable nutrition governance structures at community; sub-county and  district level.

Based in  Kakumiro office; he/she reports to the Programme Manager. He/ she provides nutrition support to two of the three districts. Responsible for development and implementation of demand triggering and maintenance, Social Behavioural Change Campaign and development of District, sub-county and village level Nutrition Teams. Coordinates with the district and sub-county to ensure effective involvement of government agriculture extension team in project activities at hub, and community level.

Main Responsibilities

Planning:

Proper planning of the work schedules in consideration of logistics constraints, community constraints and participation of female and persons with disabilities in the field activities

Mobilisation:

Effective mobilisation of local government staff and relevant stakeholders to participate in planned activities, ensuring that stakeholders are consulted in the planning

Provide monthly updates to buyers and relevant sub-county authorities where the project is implemented

Collaboration:

Collaborate and work well with relevant government entities, development partners and ommunity structures during theimplementation of this project.

Jointly develop work plans and reporting regimes with local actors to foster accountability and monitoring implementation.

Hold monthly and quarterly review meetings with stakeholders on progress of project activities; emerging issues; adjustments to be made and share feedback with other team members.

Market linkages

Establishing market linkages for nutrition Action Group members and households to generate income to sustain nutrition behaviour change.

Build capacity of local entrepreneurs and Nutrition Action Group members in business entrepreneurial skills

Facilitate behaviour change communication activities through coordination with partner and other stakeholders in the districts.

Implement, monitor and evaluate BCC and nutrition sensitive agriculture activities in the district

Reporting:

Provide weekly reports to line manager on the progress towards planned activities, results achieved and
remedial actions required for the subsequent period.

Progressively report on improved nutrition outcomes and innovations

Qualifications

  • Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or  any  related field. Additional training in gender and nutrition sensitive agriculture is an  added advantage
  • At least 5 years’ experience in implementing community nutrition programmes
  • Working knowledge of sales, savings and credit cooperative societies(SACCOs), group lending or business development is an added advantage.
  • Experience working with local government and communities structure
  • Understanding of poverty and social impact on nutrition
  • Excellent learning and listening skills.
  • Strong community mobilisation skills are a must.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate high levels of   responsibility, accountability and honesty.
  • High degree of initiative,flexibility, reliability, discretion and willingness to learn;
  • Good understanding of field realities; ability to link different professional spheres: business,
