Awareness Against Human Trafficking (HAART), is a non-governmental organisation based in Nairobi and dedicated to fighting human trafficking in Eastern Africa. HAART works through a multi-disciplinary approach applying the UN Four P’s Strategy to combat trafficking in persons: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Policy and Partnership. HAART is one of the key counter-trafficking organizations in Kenya addressing the issue of human trafficking by supporting the people most affected by it and also developing best practices in the movement.

HAART is currently recruiting for the position of a Legal officer. The officer is to support victims of human trafficking and vulnerable groups to effectively access justice and realize their human and people’s rights through advocacy, networking, lobbying, legal aid and education, legal representation and research.

Contract Duration: 12 months
Position: Full-time
Working Hours: 45 hours in a week

Salary: 65,000Kes to 85,000Kes per month (Gross)

He/she will be reporting to the Outreach Care Manager

Key Duties & Responsibilities

 Providing legal advice to clients.

 Conducting research on legal issues.

 Programme work and report writing.

 Support and walk with survivors as they navigate the criminal justice framework (pre-trial, during the trial and post-trial).

 Training first responders and other key groups on the legal framework protecting victims of human trafficking.

 Legal and human rights awareness and education to HAART clients with integration of the knowledge into community outreach activities.

 Work with all the arms of the judiciary to ensure that the policies available are improved through the court.  Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure that the criminal justice framework protects the survivors that we serve.
 Conducting research into civil remedies available to victims of human trafficking and the nature of suits which can be instituted.

Essential criteria & qualification:

 A Bachelor Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized institution

 A Postgraduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law  Current practicing certificate

 Advocate of the high court of Kenya for at least 3-years post admission experience.  Membership of the Law Society of Kenya;
 At least 3 years’ experience working in litigation and dispute resolution.
 Proven ability to do research and write papers.
 Results oriented strategic thinker.  Proven interpersonal and communication skills with a high standard of spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
 Experience in the field of counter trafficking in persons and advocacy is an added advantage.
 Experience working with an NGO is an added advantage.
 Good training on human rights, advocacy and litigation.
 Have proven experience in working with / in a litigation team.
 Strong belief in human rights and equality and commitment to demonstrate integrity in all aspects.
 Experience in Online, data management and storage sites will be an added advantage.
 Strong ability to work independently, including the ability to multitask, prioritize competing tasks, and manage time effectively.
 Willingness to continually improve technical and analytical competencies
 Ability and willingness to embrace HAART values.
