Room to Read is a non-governmental, non-religious nonprofit organisation that works with many local NGOs and community based organisations to implement programmes of the organisation. Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organisations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children.

Room to Read seeks to appoint Two Literacy Coaches to be based in Limpopo.

Reporting to: Literacy Programme Officer

The purpose of the job is to provide support and coaching to teachers, librarians, and principals in order to adopt new ways of working with children thereby increasing children’s literacy skills and habit of reading.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates closely with the Literacy Program Field Officer (Technical) and the Instructional Design and Teacher Support Unit to ensure s/he is successfully implementing the program design and able to provide feedback on how well it is working
  • Regularly observes and coaches Grade 1 and 2 teachers in delivering the instructional component of the Literacy Program.  Models good classroom instruction techniques and provides feedback to teachers about their performance
  • Regularly observes and coaches primary grade teachers and librarians in the implementation of the library period and reading activities.  Models good reading activity techniques and provides feedback to teachers and librarians about their performance
  • Supports Grade 1 and 2 teachers in effective use of ongoing student tracking assessments to inform instruction
  • Conducts and analyses data related to formative student assessments to inform support for Grade 1 and 2 teachers
  • Regularly provides an update to the principal on progress and coaches him/her on ways to support teachers and ensure longer term sustainability of literacy outcomes within the school
  • Attends and participates in teacher and librarian trainings related to the Literacy programme
  • Participates in literacy events, parent meeting and other community activities
  • Participates in regular review meetings and any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfil the objectives of the organisation
  • Participates in donor site visits and provides information to donors about Room to Read’s Literacy program as needed
  • Conducts ongoing planning, documentation, and reporting of school visits
  • Documents best practices and lessons learned and shares with the Literacy Programme Field Officer

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Development, or other related field
  • One to two years of related work experience
  • Command of English (both written and oral)
  • Experience working with young children
  • Experience working with schools and teachers
  • Experience with reading, literacy or learning improvement programs
  • Computer literate
  • Interpersonal skills and a team player
  • Ability to monitor progress of program implementation
  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative
  • Desire and ability to spend 90% of time traveling and visiting school sites to provide coaching and monitor progress of program implementation
