The Legal Resources Centre is an independent, client-based, non-profit public interest law clinic, which uses law as an instrument of justice. It works for the development of a fully democratic society based on the principle of substantive equality, by providing free legal services for the vulnerable and marginalised, including the poor, homeless, and landless people and communities of South Africa who suffer discrimination by reason of race, class, gender, disability or by reason of social, economic and historical circumstances.

The Legal Resources Centre seeks to employ a Litigation Attorney in the Johannesburg Office

Responsibilities:

  • Constitutional and public interest litigation
  • Regional and international law advocacy
  • Network and present at seminars and conferences
  • Supervise and train candidate attorneys and paralegals
  • Legal research in specified LRC focus areas
  • Draft submissions to Parliament and regional and international mechanisms
  • Conduct small group and individual interviews
  • Establish and maintain contact with communities and ensuring that effective modes of communication within communities exist or are created for the dissemination of information
  • Report and compliance

Requirements:

  • Legal writing, research and communication skills
  • Strong advocacy, litigation, and case management skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure, independently and with others
  • Ability to network with partner organisations and donors
  • A commitment to strengthening public interest legal practice and transformation within the legal profession
  • A commitment to staff development and team work
  • Admission as a practising attorney, preferably with right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa
  • An LLM degree in a human rights related field will be an advantage
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in constitutional and public interest litigation (Experience in socio-economic rights litigation and matters related to unlawful detentions, torture, and protest and policing will be an advantage)
  • Displayed human rights / socio-economic rights background at the domestic, regional or international level
  • Fluency in two official South African languages, including English
  • Willingness to travel within and outside of South Africa
  • Valid Driver’s licence
