Organisational Context

JRS is an organization of the Catholic Church, in particular of the Society of Jesus and is a collaborative venture between the laity and the religious. Jesuit Refugee Service is involved in a service to refugees, IDPs and other forcibly displaced persons, through personal presence. The service that JRS offers is direct and human, and often exposed to the sufferings and limitations of refugee life. This can involve arduous physical conditions, work under stress and limited resources. Through our presence we help sustain the values of human solidarity and hope in people who have faced the realities of displacement occasioned by disasters (be they natural or man-made), disastrous inequalities in political, economic, ethnic, social and other spheres of life, hatred and despair.

To do its work, JRS seeks to recruit those who can offer service under such difficult conditions, work in a collaborative and transparent manner, commit themselves to train others in whatever competencies they possess, and live a lifestyle that reflects a commitment to address issues of injustice.

Organisational Context/Role

This is a position based in Nairobi and the Livelihoods Officer is intended to create Livelihoods opportunities for refugees in Nairobi that will enable them to be self-reliant. The Livelihoods Officer will be responsible for the livelihoods department in JRS Nairobi, under the direction and supervision of the Project Director/Country Director.

Key responsibilities

  • To expose digital workers to various forms of work and training related to online jobs.
  • To work with JRS coordinators in selection of both the mentors and apprentices of the livelihood project.
  • To conduct and co-ordinate trainings for the mentors and the beneficiaries on various aspects in respect to agri-business skills, financial literacy and management in the livelihood project.
  • To assist with the Promotion and sale of farm output of the Refugee projects.
  • To network with livelihood groups in Nairobi and its environs and identify effective approaches to the programme implementation.
  • To keep an updated data on all the beneficiaries and apprentices in Nairobi for the Livelihoods office.
  • To conduct regular meetings with the livelihood groups formed in Nairobi.
  • To organise trainings on basic bookkeeping, market surveys for all livelihood beneficiaries and support creation of investment groups.
  • To represent JRS in livelihood planning meetings / workshops in Nairobi or else as need be.
  • To undertake sensitization sessions targeting County Authority zonal Business licensing and inspection officers.
  • To implement farming activities in local communities with emphasis on promoting group development through support, coaching, mentoring, regular feedback and identification of livelihood needs and opportunities.
  • To prepare narrative reports on each programme component on regular bases and as per the request of supervisors.
  • To facilitate regular training to the targeted beneficiaries on best agricultural practices.
  • To provide bi-weekly and monthly reports on livelihood activities.
  • To monitor and ensure proper usage of tools/equipment by the mentors to ensure that they gainfully help the apprentices in the course of training.
  • To work with the JRS coordinators to monitor all the apprentices and evaluate them at the end of the apprenticeship.
  • To share/document lessons learnt and appropriate recommendations for program value addition.

Specific livelihoods objectives

Agri-business

  • Be part of implementation of a pilot agri-business project in bee-keeping and organic farming which will involve assessing businesses, carrying out the production, marketing directly to local existing markets and organic food markets. JRS will ensure a conducive environment for the group.

Mikono Shop

  • Purchase quality products from refugees and advise on producing quality.
  • Record all sales and purchases with reconciliation and conduct market research and identity new markets.
  • Identify exhibition opportunities where JRS can participate actively.

IGA and Safety Net and Consumption.

  • Support Income Generating Activities for refugees and asylum seekers through start-up capital for entrepreneurs by leading the beneficiaries’ identification process, initial visits by to business sites and home visits which is a socio-economic assessment will take place through initial visits to homes and businesses sites and facilitating business training skills.
  • Follow up monitoring visits. This will involve monitoring the progress the individual refugee is making towards accomplishment of the action plan.
  • Identify possible applicants through project staff, field monitors, pastoral worker, community helpers and facilitate in trainings and workshops.
  • Hold frequent meetings with the beneficiaries whereby help can be given on coming up with individual work plans.

Vocational trainings

  • Conduct home visits for capacity assessment.
  • Visit institutions selected by the beneficiaries for verification.
  • Conduct home visits for capacity assessment.

Advocacy

  • Develop linkages with corporate institutions and foundations to help support Income Generating Activities for refugees and asylum seekers through start-up capital for entrepreneurs.
  • Undertake sensitization sessions targeting County Authority zonal Business licensing and inspection officers.
  • Be a big support and guiding factor in the Income Generating Activities for refugees and asylum seekers through start-up capital for entrepreneurs.
  • Ensure through various trainings that the target groups are well equipped with necessary skills, capacities and assets, and be of help to JRS in identifying a qualified consultant in agri-business that could facilitate trainings from certified institutions.

Qualifications

Education

  • A degree/post-graduate diploma in social studies, business, sociology, community development, computer science or related field of study.
  • Trained on Child safeguarding and protection policy/practices.

Work experience

  • At least 2 years of working with a recognised NGO on livelihood programs and participatory approaches in a humanitarian set up.
  • Excellent organisational skills including the ability to strategically prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work flexibly and under difficult circumstances.
  • Knowledge of local area and community is essential.
  • Experience in emergency and post disaster area is preferred.
  • Passionate about advocacy for the rights and needs of people with special needs.
  • Ability to work in international settings and with various departments to implement successful approaches to psychosocial matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and deliver under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Good time and resource management skills.

Leadership skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to positively influence others and successfully reconcile differences.
  • A self-starter with a strong results orientation and with high levels of integrity, credibility and dependability.
