Overview of the Position

MCDI is seeks to recruit a Malaria Surveillance Officer for the ProACT study under the PMI Impact Malaria project. The position shall be based in Chadiza, Eastern province of Zambia. The Malaria Surveillance Officer will be part of the ProACT study team working on the topic of proactive case detection of malaria, which includes PMI Impact Malaria consortium organizations led by PSI, with technical leadership from UCSF, and management and coordination by MCDI. The PMI Impact Malaria team is supported by USAID and CDC technical experts. This position will also work in close collaboration with Ministry of Health at provincial, district, facility and community levels to implement the proactive case detection (ACD) study activity in Chadiza.

Duration

This position is contractual for one to three years depending on the needs expressed by USAID and reports to MCDI’s Senior Diagnostics Advisor/Project Coordinator for Zambia.

Roles and responsibilities

* Provide technical support to ProACT study community health workers

* Assist in data management and report writing

* Provide supervision as surveillance technical support

* Work with MCDI finance and administration staff to coordinate ProACT study logistics, and ensure activities comply with USAID rules/regulations and MCDI policies and procedures

* In close collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Centre (NMEC) parasitology laboratory and diagnostic staff, provide technical assistance to strengthen the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of malaria diagnosis and reporting into an assigned database at the district level

* Assist with collection, handling, storage, and shipping of study samples for laboratory testing

EDUCATION/QUALIFCATIONS:

* A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline such as Biomedical Sciences, Parasitology, or any health-related field. A master’s of public health will be an added advantage.

* 3-5 years of work experience in designing, implementing, or managing projects or studies. Research experience would be a great advantage.

* Ability to effectively train and coach community health workers

* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, about technical issues pertaining to the study protocol

* Flexibility and willingness to work with minimal supervision. Good working attitude, dynamic, and able to work well individually as well as in teams

* Self-motivation, willingness to learn, service-orientation, and ability to work under high pressure and on tight deadlines

* Experience with electronic data collection and reporting platforms

Required skills

  • At least two years’ public health experience in Zambia
  • Exceptional skills in program management and/or coordination, including development and management of work plans, milestones/targets, and budgets
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience managing health facility staff and community health workers while providing ongoing mentorship and capacity-building
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and flexibility
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Fluent spoken and written local language (Chichewa)
  • Proficient spoken and written English
