In Ethiopia, Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS has country programmes with focus on Natural Resource Management, WASH, Inclusive Markets for Smallholder beekeepers producers and Farmers and Humanitarian Assistance for drought and conflict affected communities. The Ethiopia country office is recruiting Market System Development Project Officer for its DAMMA (Developing Apiculture Management and Market Access) Project in Oromia, East Wollega Zone.

Job Description

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Lead to conduct market assessments and identify opportunities and challenges in the market system.
  • Identify market actors (Private and public) to partner with in the development of honey value chain/support services.
  • Strengthen value chain and link small holder beekeepers into these chains as well as linking them to financial and extension services
  • Assist in the linkage between small holder beekeepers producer groups, microfinance institutions and other value chain actors in the DAMMA project to get in financial inclusion with specific attention for women
  • Facilitate key actors to implement the interventions and link market actors, arrange or provide capacity development or support in other necessary manners in line with DAMMA intervention strategies.
  • Lead, facilitate and ensure branding of the project area honey for fair price
  • Lead and monitor closely the implementation of the project
  • Collect and document information, knowledge , learning relevant for the improvement of the intervention strategies
  • Coordinate the planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring and reviewing of project activities with implementing partner
  • Liaison with various zonal and district government offices in project appraisal, joint monitoring and evaluation
  • Contribute to the development of publications, learning material, documentaries
  • Market based emergency interventions including cash transfer for Borena SHIFT project
  • Render timely technical assistance to implementing partners especially in the areas of gender mainstreaming and participatory project planning methods.

Job Requirements

Education, Qualifications & other knowledge

  • Bachelor’s Degree in agriculture, agri-business, business administration or related subject. Master degree is preferable
  • Minimum 3-5 year experience in private sector development, value cabin development, agri-business or another business. Experience working for or with private sector is an important plus
  • Experience working in remote, rural environment, and closely with small holder beekeepers  and farmer groups is a plus
  • Minimum of four years extensive experience in gender, agriculture and agricultural commodities especially in honey value chain development.
  • Ability to speak the language of small holder beekeepers as well as of business players
  • Strong communication skills, ability to bring actors together, coach them and build capacities
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and spoken) in English.
