Mathematics Learning Associate at Columba Leadership 211 views0 applications

Columba Leadership’s aim is to activate the potential of young people to enhance their own life outcomes as well as contribute to positive social change in their schools and communities by offering a values-based leadership academy at schools situated in disadvantaged communities around South Africa.

Columba Leadership seeks to appoint a Mathematics Learning Associate for the Cognitive Acceleration Pilot Programme, to be based in Gauteng.

In partnership with Columba Leadership, the Cognitive Acceleration Pilot Programme (CAPP) team seeks to build a world-class, sustainable and scalable programme that can lead the work of Cognitive Acceleration in Columba schools, and potentially to all schools across South Africa. The approach is characterised by a focus on challenging mental activity that is used to promote development (social, emotional and cognitive) and through that learning, eventually improving performance.

The purpose of the Mathematics Learning Associate is to support the Technical Lead in the development of the next phase of programme materials, predominantly in the area of Grade 8 maths. The development of the material follows a fresh approach with the intention to build a healthy, cognitively appropriate programme aligned (as far as possible) to the Grade 8 CAPS curriculum. This is an opportunity to work closely with one of South Africa’s top educators who has been in the field for over 40 years. In addition to the development of material, the Mathematics Learning Associate will work in a selected school with Grade 8 scholars conducting a series of expertly developed Cognitive Acceleration lessons which underpin the programme, documenting processes and working towards developing a team of interns towards effective cognitive acceleration facilitators.

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree in Mathematics or one of the Sciences, preferably with a PGCE (completed or in progress)
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to create structure in an unstructured environment
  • Demonstrated passion for education and youth work
  • Preferably with the ability to converse in various South African languages
