Medical Coordinator, Support

Main Purpose:

Supporting the Medical Coordinator through delegated tasks and responsibilities including administrative tasks related to the coordination of work, ensuring good relationships with local and national authorities and ensuring adequate program management in the projects, according to MSF protocols, (para)medical standards, rules of hygiene and the standard precautions  in order to ensure the delivery of quality medical care for patients and their communities as well as to improve the health conditions of the targeted population

Accountabilities:

  • Monitoring, supervising and evaluating the implementation of medical activities in the project, visiting projects according to preset schedule and participating in defining the human resources needs, materials and techniques. Assisting in the implementation of MSF protocols, (para) medical standards, the rules of hygiene and universal precautions in service.
  • Assisting in the collection of information on national health policy (meetings, reports, articles, etc.), collecting and participating in the analysis of epidemiological data (meetings, reports, articles, etc.) from the projects
  • Ensuring medical follow up of patients (treatment, improvement) in collaboration with the medical referent of the health structure and overseeing all medical expenses associated with the patient, in collaboration with the supervisors. Organize the administrative and medical information (reports, ongoing treatments), the discharge of patients and return to their homes
  • Supporting and supervising the project teams and participating in the management of the medical team in the capital (recruitment, training, monitoring their work, vacation planning, assessments, etc.). Participating in briefings and debriefings of the (para) medical team members and promoting communication and active participation in the development of the project
  • Applying the employee health policy and participating in the evaluation of hospital structures that can serve as reference structures for national and international staff. Participating in the medical monitoring of MSF personnel and overseeing all medical expenses associated with various consultations and hospitalizations in collaboration with the line manager
  • Participating in the management of the central pharmacy, advising and guiding the logistics team in the mission of drug stock management. Organizing the start-up, inventory and management of operational medical library according to the classification plan
  • Participating in the data collection and management from the projects as well as preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports and organizing · data archiving and medical reports in the project
  • Performing other duties at the request of Medco (exceptional strengthening of a field team, involvement in evaluations, etc.)

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:

  • Coach, train and motivate the teams in different project of Nigeria -OCA mission in order to align all field staff with MSF values and ethics, and ensuring their capability to carry out their job achieving MSF quality standards:
  • Ensuring proper induction of all MSF Staff.
  • Carrying out medical briefings and debriefings.
  • Identifying training needs for medical staff.
  • Identifying personnel showing potential.
  • Supervising and carrying out technical evaluations.
  • Promoting strict follow-up of MSF values and ethics by all staff and identifying any possible issue regarding this matter.
  • Any other  task  or  responsibilities  can  be  added  by the supervisor  according to the  need  identified.
  • Focal point  of the HIS  and medical data  base  of  the mission, update   the  database, ensure  quality of   data  collection, analysis  and  report , train  the MTLs  and  MAMs to  ensure  quality.Focal  point  for   AMR ,monitor  the implementation, meet with the staff to address  challenges that might occur,   ensure   each  month  projects  are  supplied  effectively  with  RUTF, milk and resomal  ,  on request of  the Medical  coordinator  the  medco Support will be  focal point for other  agreement  signed.
  • Carry-out administrative (inventory and management of the medical operational library, archiving of data and medical reports, etc.), information gathering and data collection tasks, and elaborate regular reporting, in order to have updated and reliable information about the day-to-day activity in the project and support decision-taking
  • On the request of the Medical Coordinator, carries out extra tasks (one-off reinforcement for a field team, participation in an evaluation, etc.).

REQUIREMENTS (QUALIFICATIONS):

  • Education : Medical Doctor diploma Specialization or training in tropical disease, desirable.
  • Experience:  Essential working experience in developing countries.  Desirable working experience in MSF  or other NGO’s.
  • Languages:  Mission language essential
  • Knowledge:  Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
