The Lion Heart Medical Centre is a second-line health facility located in Yele, the rural heart of Sierra Leone. The direct catchment area of the hospital is roughly 100.000 people from the surrounding communities, but patients also travel from far beyond. With a capacity of 70 beds divided over male, female, paediatric, isolation and maternity wards, the hospital provides basic health care services. Main targets groups include the under-fives and pregnant women. With around 70 local staff members and 3 expatriates, 10.000 patients are treated annually. The medical superintendent works closely together with the local hospital manager and expatriate medical officer.
Since 2017 the hospital strongly focuses on its strategy to ensure sustainability through task shifting, increased local ownership and implementing systems. Key developments include the formation of a local management team, collaboration with government authorities and a re-organization of all non-medical departments. The main overall purpose is to establish an independent en sustainable hospital.
Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility of the running of the hospital and coordination of activities in both medical and non-medical fields
- Improving and maintaining level of quality of medical services provided
- Active role in providing medical care in different wards, performing surgeries and rotation in the on-call schedule
- Maintain strong adherence to IPC guidelines
- Capacity building within the organization
- Recording and analysing hospital statistics, prepare monthly and yearly reports
- Overseeing logistic processes, human resource (HR) policies, financial administration and facility management
- Maintaining a good working relationship with the hospital manager
- Maintaining a good relationship with district health authorities en government officials at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation
- Application for and follow up of various types of government support
- Executing a zero tolerance policy towards any form of fraud, theft of bribery
- Participate actively in drafting proposals and reports for fund raising purposes
Requirements
- Licensed medical doctor with additional postgraduate training in global health and/or tropical medicine
- Basic surgical skills in obstetrics and surgery
- Previous experience in health institutions in a low resource setting
- Demonstrated managerial experience is preferred as well as an interest in logistics, finance, HR or facility management.
- Previous experience with living conditions in a remote and resource deprived area
- Highly (intrinsically) motivated, optimistic, resilient and stress resistant qualities
- Planning, prioritizing and multitasking skills
- Flexible and cultural sensitive mind set
Benefits
In addition to a salary and coverage of travel and immunization expenses, an insurance package is offered covering healthcare, disability (70%), accidents and basic pension (AOW). Accommodation is offered in close proximity of the hospital on a compound shared with other expatriate employees, students and guests.

Application information
The preferred starting date for this position is August 1st 2020. The first three months will be an orientation period to familiarize with the organization and setting, while working as a medical doctor. Appointment as Medical Superintendent will follow from November 2020. The preferred duration of the employment contract is at least two years.
