Mental Health Supervisor

Location: Abakaliki, Ebonyi
Contract Period: Indefinite

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the planning, supervision and coordination of mental health / psycho-social related services in the Ebonyi Lassa Fever programme in accordance with MSF standards in order to provide the most appropriate mental health support for patients.
  • Coordinates activities of counseling services with other relevant actors and liaises with the local counterparts (like MoH, WHO, and the Federal Teaching Hospital of Abakaliki FETHA) on mental health matters, including referral services.
  • Supervise the daily mental health activities and patient support according to MSF protocols and standards in order to provide the most appropriate psych-social for patients affected by the Lassa Virus, and their families.
  • When needed, give psychological support to patients according to MSF protocols to improve mental health conditions of patients and enhance their functionality.
  • Compile the data and statistics linked with MH activities and report to the MH activity manager; as well as the epidemiological team as required.
  • In collaboration with the MH Activity Manager, assist in planning and facilitating internal (within MSF) and external trainings / workshops.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Be available to conduct outreach to community locations within Ebonyi State
  • Flexibility to respond to emergent cases on weekends, if the MH Activity Manager is not available.
  • Commit to co-management of patients in the multi-disciplinary treatment team in the Primary Health setting (FETHA).

Minimum Required Skills and Qualifications
Education:

  • University Degree in Clinical Psychology/Counseling/other related field is essential Postgraduate Degree in Clinical Psychology is an added advantage

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of Psychosocial counseling experience
  • Previous management/supervision experience desirable
  • Experience working with the psychological effect of mental health or other traumatic event highly desirable
  • International NGO experience will be desirable

Languages:

  • English Language and Igbo language essential.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
