Desired start date: ASAP**
Duration of the mission:** 2 months (renewable)
Location: North Nigeria, Zamfara State
ABOUT THE MISSION
SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL operates in the state of Borno, in the cities of Maiduguri, Monguno, Ngala and Dikwa.
The approach of SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL revolves around the response to the urgent needs in water, hygiene, sanitation, food security and shelter as well as the prevention and response to outbreaks.
Aside from the emergency response, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL develops early recovery projects notably to restore the livelihoods of the population. This flexibility of approach is a necessity considering the very unstable context characterised by important movements of population, both displacements and returns. The response implemented by the team to counter cholera outbreaks include the disinfection of households, chlorination of water points, and the distribution of “cholera kits”. In addition, SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL ensures the coordination of the Cholera Task Force in the Borno State.
To ensure the basic needs of the populations in the most hard to reach areas, the teams adopted an integrated approach aiming at improving water, hygiene and sanitation, shelter and non-food items conditions. These interventions answer the most urgent needs, while promoting a longer-term impact by building/rehabilitating durable infrastructures. Furthermore, the drilling of boreholes or installation of generators or of solar equipment on infrastructures ensures the sustainability of the access to drinkable water.
ABOUT THE JOB
General objective:
SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL is planning to open a base in North West Nigeria and is currently exploring the area and defining a strategic positioning for the organization. The Field Coordinator is in charge of managing a Shelter / kits distribution activity in response to floods, to continue the need assessment and liaise with the authorities.
The main challenges:
The Nigeria mission is significant in terms of HR and financial volumes. Nevertheless, SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL has no presence nor activities yet in North West (NW) Nigeria. HQ (Emergency Desk) manages the region’s exploration and assessment in coordination with the Nigeria country team. The field coordinator would be the first expatriate hired specifically for NW Nigeria.
The security context is highly sensitive in NW Nigeria with the presence of active banditry, local community conflicts and activism of armed groups. Security is one of the main challenge and constraints for implementing.
This is a particular position of field coordinator as it is also a base opening. The main priorities will be:
- Liaising with authorities at state and local levels to ensure access of SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL in the selected areas of intervention;
- Ensuring SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL sign a MoU with relevant states authorities;
- Coordinate with partners and all relevant stakeholder to determine SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL’s positioning in the area;
- If necessary, coordinate and lead further need assessment and information collection activities;
- Managing security and define a community acceptance strategy to deploy activities;
- Hire a small core team in NW;
- Put in place basic procedures and processes of SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL on the ground;
- Manage the distribution of shelter kits as the first activity of SI in NW Nigeria;
- Support the writing of proposals.
One of the objective is to identify and find funding. Emergency Desk and Abuja teams will lead this activity but the Field coordinator will feed the proposals with his/her positioning and information.
The position will be mobile between Abuja, Gusau and Sokoto as well as potentially in other secondary cities. The living conditions in Abuja are comfortable even if the recent tensions and the COVID situation have decreased the possibilities for social gathering. In North West, SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL has no guesthouse and the accommodation will be either in a new GH or in hotels.
