The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is seeking to appoint an Operations Manager for the Hararghe Health Research Partnership. The post-holder will be based in Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, where LSHTM collaborates with Haramaya University through the Hararghe Health Research partnership (HHR). A programme of advanced research is developing based on the initial development of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) site. This includes social science, clinical surveillance, demographic surveillance in two sites, microbiology and pathology. An international standard laboratory has been set up on-site to support this work.

The post-holder will lead the operational development and management of HHR, focusing on the establishment of HR, finance, procurement and other operational and logistical systems to enable long-term sustainability and future growth of the partnership and its research. S/he The post-holder will be the most senior professional services staff member in HHR, which employs 60 staff and part-funds a further 100 staff.

Candidates must have a post-graduate degree in Business Administration or a related subject, or equivalent experience. The post-holder must have substantial management experience in: a business operations role; finance systems and management; procurement systems and processes; HR operations and policy development. Experience in health and safety systems development, and transport and/or facility management is also essential. The post-holder must have the ability to work closely and build relationships with national and international colleagues, and negotiate effectively with senior officials, having understood and taken consideration of complex political issues.Experience of living and working in a low-income country is essential. The full-time post is funded until 30 June 2021, with likelihood of extension subject to grant funding renewal. The salary will be on the Professional Services Scale at Grade 6, in the range £40,011 – £45,437 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting) with a market supplement of up to £8,000 depending on skills and experience. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
