About the role:
The People function supports all Girl Effect’s eight (8) offices at every stage of the employee life cycle with a primary focus on recruitment, leadership development, performance management and policy creation.
For the first time Girl Effect is seeking to recruit a People Manager in Nairobi who will be able to provide more localized support to their teams in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda and Tanzania, as well as assist in the development of their Kenyan operations. Reporting into the People Lead based in London, the role will also be involved in supporting global projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understanding the business and wider context, to identify people solutions and initiatives that drive performance, engagement and impact.
- Partnering with Country Leads and their teams to provide support, guidance and challenge across a range of people issues in order to achieve their objectives and influence strategy, including:
- Leading the people elements of change activity
- Driving talent and development initiatives
- Delivering any cyclical People activities such as pay review, promotions and performance conversations
- Resolving day to day people issues
- Leading and delivering specific People projects across the business (including cross functional groups) so as to ensure successful delivery and adoption within the People function.
- Undertaking the review of current compensation and benefits offered (including allowances, leave, life insurance, medical schemes, pension etc) across Girl Effect’s geographies.
- Working alongside the People Lead to provide recommendations to the senior leadership team which will attract, motivate and retain highly skilled staff.
- Evaluating and suggesting improvements to the current appraisal and performance management practices with the aim of developing a robust toolkit that will effectively develop Girl Effect’s employees, identify and solve issues when they rise and enable succession planning
- Providing technical support and capacity building in people matters to senior management and employees
- Keeping abreast with developments in Girl Effect’s markets and implications on the organization
Does this sound like you?
- Bachelor’s degree in any relevant fields
- 5+ years of experience in managing the HR function end to end
- Experience managing HR operations in an organization spread over multiple countries, at least 3-4 countries
- Proven experience working in an environment of rapid growth with the ability to bring energy and a dynamic approach to work that creates a positive can-do culture
- Track record of operating as a true HR Business Partner (ideally in more than one organisation) and partnering with senior leaders and their teams to influence the business agenda
- Commercially savvy with a track record of using internal and external intelligence to achieve business outcomes that align with the Girl Effect way
- Experience in shaping, leading and delivering projects successfully
- Strong working knowledge of African employment law, ideally in one or more of Girl Effect’s markets
- Demonstrable agility and pragmatism with a growth mindset, flexibility and creativity
- Exceptional organisational skills; can plan and prioritise effectively across conflicting priorities to achieve great results
- Outstanding communicator and influencer, both verbally and in writing; ability to handle tricky situations with flair and strong listening skills
- Resilience; can absorb pressure and uses self-awareness to manage their own emotions and those of others
- Flexibility to travel to Girl Effect’s offices across Africa
