Background:

Pharo School, Homosha is an innovative boarding school for female students in Grade 9 through 12 in rural Ethiopia. The Pharo School, funded by the Pharo Foundation (UK), aims to transform the lives of young Ethiopian women by providing a high quality educational experience, along with covering all educational expenses (tuition, boarding, meals, textbooks, uniform and supplies). The Pharo Foundation’s vision is focuses on a self-reliant Africa. The Pharo School’s goal is to further the Foundation’s vision by providing a rigorous and relevant education rooted in developing problem solving skills, fostering creative and innovative thinking and equipping students with a high standard of English literacy.

The Pharo School opened its doors in October 2018 to sixty Grade 9 students, in a temporary school campus location in Assosa, Benishangul-Gumuz Region. In July 2019, the school will relocate to its new campus, 40 kilometers away from Assosa, in rural Homosha.

As the school looks forward to transitioning to a new campus and its second year of operation, we are looking for an outstanding, dedicated, and dynamic problem-solver to join our team in the role of Human Resources Manager.

Overview of the Role:

  1. The Human Resource Manager is responsible for setting up a professionally run Human Resources Department at the school and ensuring that the Pharo School meets all necessary HR obligations.
  2. The Human Resources Manager is responsible for facilitating the ongoing development of innovative policies and practices to ensure that the Pharo School is a leader in creating an optimal work environment that exudes positivity, collaboration, a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
  3. The Human Resources Manager is responsible for maintaining secured, accurate and detailed HR employee records, along with up to date staff manuals, policies and procedures.
  4. The Human Resources Manager is responsible for providing input, support and guidance to the Head of School and Senior Management Team on all HR Recruitment and HR compliance.

Requirements:

  • Thorough working knowledge of Ethiopian employment standards and requirements
  • Thorough understanding of Workplace Safety and carrying out effective training and workshops
  • Degree in Human Resources Management or related education
  • Minimum of 5 years in a senior Human Resources management role, in an organization with over fifty staff
  • Well versed in maintaining complete human resource files, to the highest standard
  • Experience in developing employee contracts
  • Outstanding English comprehension, reading, writing and speaking skills
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive information to high professional standards of discretion and confidentiality
  • High level of interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the ethos of the School
  • High level of organizational skills
  • High level of computer skills including a high-degree of comfort with Microsoft Office (Word), Google Suite, online calendars and email
  • The ability to work as part of a team in a very busy, fast-paced working environment
  • Outstanding problem solving skills and the ability to function independently
  • The ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work

Specific Duties Include:

  • Staff recruitment, including job postings, screening/interviewing prospective candidates, reference checks
  • Volunteer recruitment, including job postings, screening/interviewing prospective candidates, reference checks
  • On-boarding and training of staff and volunteers
  • Training and supporting staff in health and safety matters
  • Documenting and managing annual leave dates, and other matters related to employee attendance
  • Providing payroll support
  • Developing and managing a system to ensure absentee-coverage
  • Developing and participating in a system and schedule for employee appraisals
  • Being a key contact point for all staff
  • Coaching and mentoring staff
  • Advising on and developing HR policies and procedures
  • Developing and updating staff handbooks and other manuals in Amharic and English
  • Maintaining detailed employment records and providing clearance letters
  • Reporting regularly to the Head of School
