The Federation is served by a Secretariat based in Geneva, with regional and country offices throughout the world. The Secretariat is led by the IFRC Secretary General and provides the central capacity of the International Federation to serve, connect, and represent National Societies. The Secretariat’s focus includes providing support to the IFRC governance mechanisms; setting norms and standards; providing guidance; ensuring consistency; coordination and accountability for performance; knowledge sharing; promoting collaboration within and respect for the RCRC Movement; and expanding engagement with partners. The Secretariat’s headquarters is organized in three main business groups: (i) Partnerships, including Movement and Membership; (ii) Programs and Operations; and (iii) Management. The Secretariat has five regional office, as follows: Americas (Panama City); Africa (Nairobi); Asia/Pacific (Kuala Lumpur); Europe (Budapest); Middle East and North Africa (Beirut).

The International Federation and Red Crescent Societies of the Red Cross (IFRC) ‘s Southern Africa Country Cluster office is in Pretoria, South Africa and serves ten countries, namely Angola, Botswana, E-Swatini,  Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
To strengthen its presence and ensure better integration and effective support to its members, National Societies, the research and the development of resources is an essential pillar of the IFRC’s approach.

This position is based in Pretoria, South Africa to support the programs team in regular monitoring of activities, trainings, reporting periodic data and information from all programs as well as Information Management (IM).

Job purpose

The PMER Intern’s overall task is to support the PMER and IM functions in providing assistance in the completion of monthly operational reports; and to work with National Societies and IFRC staff in Pretoria to improve the PMER/IM capacity so that IFRC M&E and reporting standards are met.

Job duties and responsibilities

Under the guidance of the programs Officer, the PMER Intern is responsible for:

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Working closely with the sectors to ensure that reports incorporate accurate and relevant information.
  • Supporting and monitor with quality checks of activity reports/inputs from the field teams.
  • Assisting in the carrying out of assessments, evaluation and reviews.

Reporting

  • Initiating the collection and collation of inputs from the field and ensuring that accurate information and required formats are used, in order to support the drafting of various reports including pledge-based reports for various donors.
  • Assisting with the internal and external reporting based on IFRC standards.

Information Management

  • Provide IM technical support to the sectors including Health, Nutrition, WASH, CTP and Shelter.
  • Enabling the flow of data from the field (via the National Societies to the IFRC Country Cluster team)
  • Identifying gaps in data collection and work with National Societies to the IFRC Country Cluster team to cover the gaps.
  • Provide technical guidance over tools that support data collection and analysis such as Open Data Kit (ODK), KoBo Toolbox etc.
  • Ensuring data quality; by improving data collection forms, training of staff, developing data-processing procedures, and other possible actions.
  • Make data available to operation teams in the field and the Regional Office in a way to enable better data-driven decision making.
  • Disseminate information and provide data analysis to all those requiring them, in a timely and useful format.
  • Timely creation/generation of information products such as maps, infographics and other data visualizations to support the decision-making process and cover the information needs for the Operation.

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance in training volunteers on the PMER tools, and ensure quality training is done according to IFRC standards (including log frames, M&E plans, etc).

Duties applicable to all staff

  • Actively work towards the achievement of the Federation Secretariat’s goals
  • Abide by and work in accordance with the Red Cross and Red Crescent principles
  • Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager
