Programme Officer (Livelihood & DRR Support), Bahir Dar, Ethiopia 201 views0 applications

WFP seeks candidates of the highest integrity and professionalism who share our humanitarian principles.

Selection of staff is made on a competitive basis, and we are committed to promoting diversity and gender balance.

ABOUT WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world

achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

In 2020 WFP CO Ethiopia has launched its CSP 2020-2025. The five-year country strategic plan is based on WFP’s recognized strengths and on strong strategic and operational partnerships with the Government, private sector entities, non-governmental organizations and other United Nations agencies. While the bulk of operations will continue to address the immediate short-term needs of refugees, internally displaced persons and other food-insecure and undernourished people, there will be a gradual expansion and intensification of climate change adaptation, resilience and livelihood diversification initiatives also linked to the humanitarian-development-peace nexus. WFP will focus on the prevention of malnutrition, the building of resilience and the integration of nutrition concerns and gender equality throughout the portfolio.

Following the launch of the CSP, WFP ETCO has revised its organigramme having Activity 5 responsible for Strategic Outcome 2: Vulnerable and food-insecure populations in targeted areas have increased resilience to shocks.

Under the Activity 5 portfolio, there is three major on-going initiative. Out of those three, two are implemented in the Amhara region, namely: KfW-funded R4 (with a top-up from Danida) and KfW-funded Response to Desert Locust Infestation.

Both initiatives are strategically very important for WFP ETCO because of the theme of the actions, the level of the negative impact that lack of proper interventions could have on the beneficiaries and the existing relationship with the Donor(s).

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide.

WFP was first established in 1961[4] after the 1960 Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Conference, when George McGovern, director of the US Food for Peace Programmes, proposed establishing a multilateral food aid programme. The WFP was formally established in 1963 by the FAO and the United Nations General Assembly on a three-year experimental basis. In 1965, the programme was extended to a continuing basis.

Organization

The WFP is governed by an Executive Board which consists of representatives from 36 member states. Ertharin Cousin is the current Executive Director, appointed jointly by the UN Secretary General and the Director-General of the FAO for a five-year term. She heads the Secretariat of the WFP. The European Union is a permanent observer in the WFP and, as a major donor, participates in the work of its Executive Board.

Its vision is a "world in which every man, woman and child has access at all times to the food needed for an active and healthy life."

The WFP has a staff of about 11,500 people, the majority of whom work in remote areas.

Goals and strategies

United Nations C-130 Hercules transports deliver food to the Rumbak region of Sudan.

The WFP unloads humanitarian aid at the Freeport of Monrovia during Joint Task Force Liberia.

A WFP armored vehicle.

The WFP strives to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, with the ultimate goal in mind of eliminating the need for food aid itself.

The objectives that the WFP hopes to achieve are to:

"Save lives and protect livelihoods in emergencies"

"Support food security and nutrition and (re)build livelihoods in fragile settings and following emergencies"

"Reduce risk and enable people, communities and countries to meet their own food and nutrition needs"

"Reduce undernutrition and break the intergenerational cycle of hunger"

WFP food aid is also directed to fight micronutrient deficiencies, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, and combat disease, including HIV and AIDS. Food-for-work programmes help promote environmental and economic stability and agricultural production.
