MÉDECINS DU MONDE (MDM) is a French Non Governmental Organisation involved in humanitarian medical aid, operating in Ethiopia since 1988. As a response to Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) outbreak in Afar region, MdM has started implementing on 13 of August 2018 a six month project.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • The Project Coordinator will be under the supervision and the authority of the MdM General coordinator. S/he will work under the technical guidance of the   medical coordinator based in Addis Abeba, especially as it relates to Project monitoring. The Project Coordinator will also play a very important role as an MdM regional representative and interlocutor between MdM, the local government authorities and NGO at regional level.
  • More specifically, the project coordinator will have the responsibility to implement the project integrating all the components (activities, representation, team management, partnership etc). The main tasks will be the following:
  • Implement the project in collaboration with Afar Regional Health Bureau in line to the project agreement signed
  • Manage the field office in Semara with the team members (including one admin/log field officer, one cleaner and  two drivers)
  • Implement the Monitoring and Evaluation Plan (indicators follow-up) according to the Project Logical Frame work
  • Implement the activities according to the Project logical frame work: training, IEC tools, social mobilization, health care delivery on case management   etc.
  • Coordinate, monitor and integrate the activities defined in the logical framework and with the different actors involved and team members
  • Oversee the administration, accountability, logistic project follow up in line with the MdM procedures
  • Monitor monthly advance request according to the needs of the project
  • Regional Health Bureau advance follow up monitoring
  • Complete the monthly report and donor report (including follow up and supervision of the Regional health bureau report)
  • Develop and maintain good relations and coordination with government officials and regulatory bodies in order to facilitate the work of MdM
  • Collect information about context and security situations and report to the MdM general coordinator

Duty station: Semera – Zone 1 – Afar region – frequent travel zone 1(Dubti, Afambo and Asayita) and zone 3 (Amibera, Awashfentale and Gewane)

 The Project Coordinator is based in Semara and one week every 6 weeks is in Addis Ababa office

S/He could travel to the MdM project area and others areas if needed.

Terms of employment: Short term contract; 5 month duration; starting immediately

Job Requirements

Qualification and Experience

  • Graduate degree in Public Health/Environmental health/ any medical background
  • At least 1 – 2 years professional experience on emergency response by a similar position with an international NGO is needed
  • Previous experience working with Regional authorities’(Regional health bureau, BOFED..)
  • Excellent knowledge of project cycle management and programming
  • Experience in team management
  • Excellent communication skills with sense of diplomacy
  • Excellent reporting skills (progress report / donor / report / authorities…)
  • Ability to classify and manage priorities  – High autonomous is required
  • Organizational skills and Rigor
  • Understanding and adherence to humanitarian principles
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft office and internet: Good command of Excel is mandatory
  • Able to work in difficult living conditions (isolated area)
  • Fluent English (oral and written) mandatory & Afar language will be an added value
  • Strong commitment to the organization and its values

Médecins du Monde (MdM; French pronunciation: [medsɛ̃ dy mɔ̃d]) or Doctors of the World, provides emergency and long-term medical care to the world's most vulnerable people. It also advocates to end health inequities.

It was founded in 1980 by a group of 15 French physicians, including Bernard Kouchner. It works in both the developed and developing world.

MdM was formed with a mission to provide timely emergency medical care, free of legal and administrative restrictions; to work with local populations to ensure long-term sustainability of healthcare systems; and to advocate on behalf of client populations.

After more than 35 years of work, MdM is a famously active advocate for its beneficiaries, and works to change the underlying inequalities that affect people's ability to access medical care.

MdM was formally established on 1 February 1980. Its goals were "to go where others will not, to testify to the intolerable, and to volunteer".

Its origins lay in a 1979 intervention to assist a drifting boat of Vietnamese refugees in the South China Sea. Kouchner, with volunteer doctors, journalists, and others organized a hospital boat, L'Île de lumière, to provide medical care and to report the refugees' suffering.

MdM was founded as Bernard Kouchner and 14 others doctors split from the group he previously founded, Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF, or Doctors WIthout Borders). It has been reported Kouchner felt that MSF was giving up its founding principle of témoignage ("witnessing"), which refers to aid workers making the atrocities they observe known to the public.

Kouchner was president of MdM from 1980 to 1982. In 1989, the foundation of MdM Spain paved the way for the creation of the MdM international network. In 2015, the MdM global network consisted of fifteen associations; France (founded 1980), Spain (founded 1989), Greece (founded 1990), Italy and Switzerland (both founded 1993), Sweden (founded 1994), Cyprus (founded 1995 by Elena Theoharous[1]), Argentina (founded 1998), Belgium, Canada and Portugal (all founded 1999), as well as in Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands, and the USA.
