Handicap International is changing his name and becomes « Humanity & Inclusion ». HI, Humanity & Inclusion is an independent and impartial aid and development organisation with no religious or political affiliations operating in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable people to help meet their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
Since the organisation was first founded in 1982, we have set up development programmes in 62 countries and responded to many emergencies. Today we have a budget of around 150 million euros, with 3500 employees worldwide.

JOB CONTEXT :
Between 2009 and 2013, Handicap International was present in Uganda implementing Mine Risk Education activities. These activities concluded in 2013 when Uganda was declared free of mines in 2012.
In October 2017, HI launched its new programme directed at the refugee response in Arua District, West Nile region, where the organization provided psychosocial support services, community-based rehabilitation, protection of persons with specific needs, and disability inclusion. These actions were implemented in Omugo Settlement, the extension of Rhino Camp Settlement where most new refugees are being settled, and Imvepi Settlement. HI has now expanded its rehabilitation project funding from September 2018, in consortia with Medical Teams International (MTI) to cover all three settlements in Arua District (Omugo, Imvepi and Rhino). In Q1 2019, HI launched 3 projects: an Inclusive Education project in Arua, Moyo and Yumbe Districts, a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support project in the Congolese Refugee Response in Southwest Uganda, and a Sexual Reproductive Health project covering various districts throughout Uganda. HI is also launching an innovative project under DFID funding under the Global Disability Innovation Fund: 3D Printing through Emergency Tele Rehab Access (3D-PETRA) which will bring appropriate, life changing orthopaedic devices to people in need in Arua District. In October 2019, HI launched an exciting Inclusive Livelihoods project under a consortium led by BRAC Uganda and in partnership with NUWODU, the umbrella organization for women with disabilities.
These actions comprise the components of HI’s Uganda Strategy. The total mission portfolio is 2.2 million EURO, implemented by a staff of over 90.
HI is legally registered in Uganda. HI’s Head Office is in Kampala, and the West Nile operations are based in the office in Arua Town, with different field offices in operational areas. IN total, HI now operates in 10 Districts.
YOUR MISSION:
The P&O TA is working within the Comprehensive Refugee Health Response project. S/he is part of the rehabilitation team in charge of delivery of orthoses manufactured with 3D printer. S/he is responsible for the whole process of fitting from patient identification until devices delivery. S/he is working in a multidisciplinary approach with the holistic rehabilitation team available on the field.
S/he will be under the supervision and responsibility of the Operational Coordinator and will receive technical support from the Rehabilitation Specialist (HQ) as well as from the 3D Expert.
Main responsibilities:
-You ensure the technical support to all persons involved in the process of fitting orthopaedic devices targeted by the Project
-You build communication and technical coherence among the mission’s in close collaboration with the rehabilitation team and the 3D Expert Consultant
-You ensure the integration of the digital process within the rehabilitation service of Arua Referral Hospital.
-You are writing regular mission reports to be shared with the management team and 3D Expert Consultant.
YOUR PROFILE :
- You hold a bachelor degree in P&O Science
- You have at least 5 years of professional experience as a P&O practitioner
- You are skilful in CAD CAM technology adapted to orthosis
- You have experience in education and training
- You have previous experience in humanitarian field
- You have strong organisational, interpersonal and intercultural skills
- You show ability to work under pressure and to travel frequently
- You speak English (oral and written). French is an asset
- Experience in Africa would be an asset
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION :
Arua is considered a relatively safe city, but with few options for entertainment, sports and health facilities. Arua is Level 1 security but basic safety precautions must be taken by individuals particularly at night, and Arua is an occasional hot spot for political rallies and protests. HI has a field office in the town and a guest house in the suburbs of Arua, and a sub-base (accommodation and office) in the Omugo refugee settlement where the field staff are located.
HI provides a standby driver with a vehicle for movement around the town, although the use of public transport and boda bodas are not allowed.
Arua is 1 hour by flight or 8 hours by vehicle from Kampala. HI’s head office is currently located in Kampala city.
