Background:

The DRC Somalia Programme is the largest programmes in East Africa region and has been providing relief and development services since 1997. DRC is among the INGOs with the largest presence in Somalia, with country-wide programmes implemented through six main sub offices in Somaliland, Puntland, Hiran Region, Gedo Region, Bay Region and Banadir Region. Using a human rights framework, the DRC Somalia operations focuses mainly on people who are affected by displacement, including refugees, internally displaced, and migrant.

Overall Purpose of the role:

The selected candidate will be leading the implementation of Health and GBV response activities specially health component through GBV principles. He/ she will closely work with the health project officer and the existing network of Maternal Child Health (MCH) clinics and Primary Health Units (PHU) to extend health service provision through gap filling and to enhance health care capacity within these clinics. The assistant will work to promote a safe and access to health services for GBV survivors with respect of survivors centered approaches.

The Health and GBV Assistant will also be responsible to produce weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning and direct implementation of Health and GBV related activities including provision of services to GBV survivors and ensuring GBV principles are adhered at all level.
  • To provide high quality survivors centered health services to Gender based Violence survivors.
  • Conduct awareness raising on health and GBV session to community-based protection committees.
  • Facilitate training on timely referral pathways and adequate responses are provided (provision of health kits and timely referral to other relevant services based on the existing service mapping and Standard Operation Procedures).
  • Assist capacity building trainings on Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI), health promotion, rights to health and child safeguarding to the health facility staff and community-based committee’s focal points.
  • Support and facilitate health worker training, GBV primary care and case management at the target health facilities
  • Assist health workers training on how to facilitate case management, follow up and incident recording in the case tracker linked to the GBV information management system (GBVIMS).
  • Assist strengthening referral pathways for GBV/ SEAH and child protection by ensuring coordination among service providers through establishment of referral protocols.
  • Facilitate strengthening of referral pathways through effective coordination with relevant Government agencies, and GBV coordination mechanisms in the target locations.
  • Provide weekly, monthly and quarterly reports on number of survivors provided to health services.
  • Conducting trainings on GBV and health for key stakeholders and ensuring direct protection messaging will be provided to targeted community leaders, women, and children through psychosocial support (PSS) activities and awareness raising sessions.
  • Participate and maintain effective relationship with GBVWG, CPWG, protection working group in Jowhar for better coordination and referral pathways among service providers.
  • Follow up GBV and children Protection cases referred by caseworkers for safe shelter in collaboration with related stakeholders.
  • Facilitate the preposition AWD /Cholera response kits in Jowhar by supporting the Integrated Emergency Response Teams (IERTs) in the event of AWD/ Cholera outbreaks within the district.
  • Coordinate with the sub national health cluster coordination mechanisms including health and WASH cluster and raise awareness of risks of water source contamination and resultant AWD/ Cholera outbreak during flooding within Jowhar.
  • Facilitate provision of medical equipment and supplies including essential medicines midwifery kits and
  • Carry out any other relevant duties as directed your direct supervisor.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Prepare weekly / monthly individual work plans, with the inputs of your supervisor will serve as guideline for implementation.
  • Continuously monitor of protection activities and report on progress, challenges and recommend solutions.
  • Participate in all relevant meetings, workshops, seminars and training as directed and provide feedback

Education, experience & technical competencies. (include years of experience)

Essential:

  • University degree public health, nutrition field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum1-2 years work experience in health ,public health Protection, GBV, child protection with a demonstrated focus on protection program design and implementation.
  • protection in working an international NGO, UN agency or in humanitarian response setting.
  • Experience in working with displaced and/or conflict affected populations, such as refugees or IDP
  • Knowledge of community-based protection approaches, preferably including experience
  • Basic familiarity with MS application packages (Word, Excel and database software) and willingness to develop further.
  • Good cooperation skills, ability to work well independently and in a team;
  • Experience working with International NGO’s, UN agencies and/or local authorities in complex emergencies
  • Strong self-starter, able to take initiative and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Strong listening and empathy skills, as well as commitment to supporting women and children survivors/ at risk;

Languages:

  • Fluency in written and spoken Somali & English.
