BACKGROUND

Since its foundation in 1968, GRT (Group for Transcultural Relations) has been working with socially marginalized groups and individuals by setting up protection mechanisms in order to promote social inclusion.

GRT is active in Somalia/Kenya since 1996, where the main fields of intervention are: Community Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Protection (GBV and Street Children) and (forced) Migrations, being expression of GRT’s core areas of expertise.

Job Description

In a bid of improving the quality of comprehensive protection services for refugees, GBV survivors and vulnerable children the organization seeks to fill the position of Protection Coordinator.

The Protection Coordinator will be responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of the protection programme as well as for the technical and managerial implementation of specific components. With technical and managerial support, s/he will ensure that the goals and objectives of the interventions are met in a timely and effective manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To assume primary responsibility for daily programme management and implementation of activities in the field, and ensure compliance with the objectives of the programme, work plan and spending plan.
  • To perform regular monitoring visits to project sites.
  • To supervise GRT Protection Officers and case workers in the main areas of intervention in Somalia.
  • To coordinate the collection of relevant data, their processing and up-to –date confidential dissemination to regional office, clusters and other stakeholders as directed.
  • To actively represent GRT in clusters and working groups in Mogadishu (or elsewhere in Somalia) as directed.
  • To ensure that the staff (GRT and partners) provide appropriate services resulting in high quality assistance to beneficiaries.

· To provide mentoring and specific capacity-building for the staff including specific management skills as well as broadening skills in technical areas (GBV, case management, psychosocial support, referral mechanism, community-outreach and awareness-raising).

  • To manage the programme budget in a timely manner in accordance with all GRT and donor programmatic and financial protocols and regulations
  • To contribute to project proposal writing, to identify and elaborate new intervention on the basis of GRT strategies and in collaboration with GRT Regional Representative
  • To fulfill all donors and GRT reporting requirements, ensure the timely preparation and submission of financial and narrative reports
  • To ensure active collaboration, information sharing and joint meetings between the programme, local authorities and other stakeholders to identify and strengthen support for project activities and avoid duplication

Required qualification and competencies:

· Master’s degree in psychology, in social work or other social sciences, gender/women studies, or other appropriate fields (or Bachelor combined with strong working experience in protection field);

· At least 3 years project management experience in the field of protection /or extremely vulnerable individuals in conflict-affected populations with international organizations;

· Excellent command of spoken and written English.

· Report/proposal writing skills

· Proven high level skills in program coordination, management and supervision

· Proven experience in Monitoring and Evaluation

· Experience in liaising with local authorities and relevant stakeholders

· Proven leadership, problem solving and conflict management skills

· Proven ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

· Strong computer skills: must be competent in the use of Windows, MS office programs (Word, Excel), outlook.

· Excellent communication skills

· Independent and motivated to work in limited resource and insecure environment

· Strong negotiation, interpersonal and organization skills

· Flexible (ability to cope with stressful situations)

· Cultural and gender sensitivity, open-minded

Desirable Competencies

· Knowledge of GBVIMS and CPIMS

· Familiarity with transcultural /ethno psychiatric approaches

· Ability to speak Italian language is an asset

The GRT is born from the experience and reflections of its founder, Prof. Rosalba Newfoundland Cecchini, who worked in the '60s as a psychiatrist in Madagascar. The GRT, Group for Trans-cultural relations , the beginning is a research and training. The first activities are, in fact, for technical and engineering training Italian and foreign to the articulation of knowledge and organizational powers. In the 80 starts in international cooperation projects in order to experience, at last on the ground, the means of intervention transcultural: Nicaragua, Guatemala. Projects covered mental health, ethnic minorities, traditional medicine, social maladjustment .

From America to Africa and Central Asia increasingly on these issues, it developed the story of the GRT.
