As a registered charity, founded in 1979, Action Against Hunger operates in 45+ countries. The international network of Action Against Hunger is represented in France, United Kingdom, Spain, Canada, USA and India. Teams in the field combat hunger on 4 fronts: Nutrition and Health, Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL), Water, Sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and Mental Health and Care Practices (MHCP).

For our MHCP department in Gambella, we are currently looking for the following professional:

Psychologist (Female only)

General Assignment: 

Work Base: Nguenyyiel

Availability: As Soon As Possible

General Assignment: The MHCP HoP will be responsible for delivering and supervising the quality of mental health and care practice activities within the refugee camp.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Objective 1: To provide psychological support to beneficiaries

– To provide psychological counselling, interventions, support and engagement with caregivers/families and their children in the BFS, SC and camp community.  Additionally, support the OTP teams to identify families requiring specific monitoring and look for solutions to support the team and the families, in accordance with the situation.

– Improve play sessions and stimulation of the child, support & assist with appetite testing and health education

Objective 2 :  Supervise psychosocial workers and volunteers

Provide training on care practices for the team while taking into consideration the integration of CMAM

– Provide training for the various team members in relation to their activities and needs, to improve understanding and the implementation of basic care practices;

– Observe activities in the field to determine the team’s specific training requirements to improve understanding of care practices and organize the appropriate training in response (child development, psychological impact of malnutrition, communication with parents/guardians, play sessions, etc.).

Objective 3 :  Contribute, with the Project Manager to the implementation of MHCP activities within the BFS, SC and local community in the camp.

– Supervise the implementation of Mental health & Care Practices:

– Provide support to the team for the implementation of MH & care practices under optimal conditions by offering advice and explanations during their activities (such as during intake evaluations, psycho-social support, group activities, awareness sessions on BF & CF, home visits, community awareness activities)

– Work with the different programme head of project and contribute to integration of activities for improved treatment and prevention (OTP, awareness raising, SFP)

Objective 4 : Monitoring & Evaluation of the Project

– Support the monitoring and evaluation processes and contribute to providing, quality data for monitoring and evaluation purposes within the specified deadlines.

Objective 5 : Respect a strict confidentiality

– Strictly respect the confidentiality of data, being the property of the project’s beneficiaries and ACF.  Respect confidentiality regarding the content of clinical interviews, except when exchanging information with the psychologists in charge.

Job Requirements

Educational/Professional Background:

  • A degree in psychology.  Relevant training and/or work experience in the field of Child Care practice (e.g. psychosocial work), familiarity with participatory methods, knowledge in child development, and nutrition issues.  Minimum of 1.5 years work-related experience and NGO work experience (in the fields of early childhood development, education, gender, social work) is an asset.

Required skills:

  • Communication (listening and observation skills), experience in team management, project management and training aptitudes, coordination skills, ability to establish good relations with other people, organisation and activity supervision skills, capacity to manage priorities, precision, autonomy, creativity, flexibility, good knowledge of the area and local customs, knowledge of the local languages of the working areas (fluent), and English language (fluent), sense of confidentiality.
