Project Summary:

The Education for Peace, Recovery and Resilience (EPRR) programmatic approach to education aims to ensure that children ages 3-18 gain literacy and numeracy skills that are appropriate for their age in a safe and nurturing environment – in both formal and non-formal settings. As part of this approach, the resilience of learners, teachers, school staff, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members and community will be enhanced through relevant and targeted socio-emotional learning, psychosocial training and support.

Position Summary:

The Psychosocial Support (PSS), Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Child Protection Technical Advisor will be the technical lead on the Education Learning Team for students and teachers. S/he will ensure that all activities related to PSS-SEL and Child Protection are trauma-sensitive, age appropriate and address “Do No Harm” principles. S/he will play a key role in developing the capacity of project staff in their technical areas, as well as building the capacity of partner, government, community and school personnel in the implementation of PSS-SEL and Child Protection activities in accordance with project standards.

Reporting and Supervision:
This position will report to the Student Learning and SEL Director.

Expected Outcomes:

  • The capacity of project staff, government, community and school personnel to deliver activities that improve the social emotional well-being of children is built.
  • The capacity of project staff, government, community and school personnel to deliver PSS activities (in addition to SEL) to teachers and PTA is built.
  • Activities that respond to evolving and urgent Teacher well-being needs are built.
  • The capacity of project staff, government, community and school personnel to ensure children are safe in their schools and communities is built.
  • Child Protection and Safeguarding is mainstreamed throughout the project.
    Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide overall technical support to the project on PSS-SEL in line with evidence based good practice and extend technical oversight to project partners implementing activities in the field, ensuring that programs are of high quality and that programs are driven by data and learning, working in conjunction with other colleagues in the program;
  • Responsible for the overall practical day-to-day management and implementation of the program while promoting the active participation and involvement of relevant government officials at the state and local level as well as stakeholders on PSS-SEL and Child Protection activities;
  • Train and provide support to Master trainers, government staff and local partners on the PSS-SEL and Child Protection for teachers in formal schools;
  • Train and provide support to Master trainers and school staff on PSS-SEL and Child Protection for “senior teachers” in formal schools;
  • Review training materials and approaches associated with type of school;
  • Serve as liaison with government and local partners on issues pertaining to PSS -SEL and Child Protection;
  • Conduct monitoring of PSS-SEL and Child Protection Activities; analyze monitoring data, making appropriate adjustments to the programmatic approach based on observations and feedback; and
  • Provide technical leadership to conduct assessment of PSS-SEL and Child Protection activities.
    Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • University degree in Education, development studies, psychology, social work or other related field;
  • At least five (5) years of proven experience in technical areas related to this role (Child Protection and PSS-SEL);
  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional humanitarian or development experience with an international organization, including extensive exposure to education programming;
  • Experience in a managerial position and demonstrated capacity in office management, including capacity building of staff;
  • Ability to work as part of an in-country team, quickly set up productive working relationships, and deliver high quality training;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the complexity related to crisis including Internally Displaced People situations;
  • Familiarity with USAID or other international donor guidelines strongly preferred;
  • Previous experience in an insecure or conflict-affected setting strongly preferred;
  • Knowledge and experience in South Sudan is preferred; and
  • Good knowledge of local languages is preferred.
