Médecins du Monde (MdM) is an international humanitarian organization whose mission is to provide medical care for the most vulnerable populations, the world over, including France. It seeks to stimulate voluntary commitment from doctors, other health care providers, and from those whose expertise in other fields is needed for its activities, to enlist all competent support required for the achievement of its projects, and to seek at all times to encourage close working relationships with populations in its care.

MDM currently implements a new project in Somali Region to reduce morbidity and mortality rates of crisis affected populations through a multi-sectoral approach.

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINKS

The post holder will perform her/his tasks and duties under the supervision of the Logistics Coordinator.

He/she will work closely with the Logistics Coordinator in order to fulfil his/her duties.

He/she collaborates with the different supervisors.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

Based in Addis Ababa, with travels to Jigjiga if needed, the purchaser will be responsible for supporting the Logistics Coordinator with day to day tasks and activities and adequate logistics support to the Ethiopian mission / Coordination, the implementation of humanitarian program, in the respect of MDM procedures and donors requirements:

He will carry out purchases, analyzing market sources, and competitive pricing conditions among different suppliers in order to ensure an ongoing supply of all sorts of goods, while guaranteeing best quality and pricing for MDM goods and commodities.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Carries out the purchases linked to the purchase requests (MR) issued by the line manager and manages the administrative and accounting procedures related to purchasing.
  • Assess the local market, seeks products and suppliers that offer the best value for money, negotiates prices.
  • On request obtains different quotations from suppliers according to the MDM Purchasing policy
  • Place purchase orders to pre-selected suppliers with whom prices have been agreed.
  • Request invoices or receipts, without delay, for all purchases, check they are correctly filled and translate information written in local language before approval.
  • Track the status of any orders
  • Create and update a supplier contact list and a price list file
  • Keep informed of the evolution of the market and of the offers of the suppliers
  • Update information on purchase follow up.
  • Scan all purchase files and ensure an appropriate archiving
  • Transparent in all works he/she perform
  • Follow the delivery schedule for goods as per instruction in the purchase contract are respected
  • Ensure that all conditions agreed in the contract and/or Purchase Order have been met in terms of quality and quantity
  • Treats all claims received requesters with Logistic Coordinator and other concerned department.
  • Coordinate and resolve problem with end user departments and supplier in response to quality or quantity issues.

Employment Term:

  • 3 months with possibility of extension, start immediately

  • Education: Minimum of Collage diploma in related Field
  • Experience:  Previous experience desirable experience with other NGOs
  • Languages:   English and Amharic essentials, Somali language desirable
  • Competencies:Essential knowledge of use of computer including processing of documents (Word, Excel) , good driving skill with renewed driving license, very good communication, negotiation and organizational skills, flexibility, versatility, attention to detail, ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment, quick decision-making and prompt action, open-mindedness, curiosity, openness to new ideas, creativity, smart appearance, dynamism.

Médecins du Monde (MdM; French pronunciation: [medsɛ̃ dy mɔ̃d]) or Doctors of the World, provides emergency and long-term medical care to the world's most vulnerable people. It also advocates to end health inequities.

It was founded in 1980 by a group of 15 French physicians, including Bernard Kouchner. It works in both the developed and developing world.

MdM was formed with a mission to provide timely emergency medical care, free of legal and administrative restrictions; to work with local populations to ensure long-term sustainability of healthcare systems; and to advocate on behalf of client populations.

After more than 35 years of work, MdM is a famously active advocate for its beneficiaries, and works to change the underlying inequalities that affect people's ability to access medical care.

MdM was formally established on 1 February 1980. Its goals were "to go where others will not, to testify to the intolerable, and to volunteer".

Its origins lay in a 1979 intervention to assist a drifting boat of Vietnamese refugees in the South China Sea. Kouchner, with volunteer doctors, journalists, and others organized a hospital boat, L'Île de lumière, to provide medical care and to report the refugees' suffering.

MdM was founded as Bernard Kouchner and 14 others doctors split from the group he previously founded, Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF, or Doctors WIthout Borders). It has been reported Kouchner felt that MSF was giving up its founding principle of témoignage ("witnessing"), which refers to aid workers making the atrocities they observe known to the public.

Kouchner was president of MdM from 1980 to 1982. In 1989, the foundation of MdM Spain paved the way for the creation of the MdM international network. In 2015, the MdM global network consisted of fifteen associations; France (founded 1980), Spain (founded 1989), Greece (founded 1990), Italy and Switzerland (both founded 1993), Sweden (founded 1994), Cyprus (founded 1995 by Elena Theoharous[1]), Argentina (founded 1998), Belgium, Canada and Portugal (all founded 1999), as well as in Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands, and the USA.
