Amnesty International seeks to appoint a Regional Activism and Youth Coordinator – Africa to be based in Johannesburg.

Contract Type and Duration: Permanent

Working hours:  35

For over half a century, we’ve been campaigning for human rights wherever justice, freedom and truth are denied. We’ve reshaped policies, challenged governments and taken corporations to task. In doing so, we’ve changed thousands of lives for the better. Join Amnesty at our East and Southern Africa Regional office in Johannesburg and you will too.

This role is based at the Amnesty International East and Southern Africa Regional Offices in Johannesburg. This is an exciting role where you’ll have a huge opportunity to make a difference. In this role you will coordinate the development and implementation of regional, and where appropriate, national activism and youth strategies, plans and projects. You will contribute to the development of global, tactical, regional and national campaigns and campaign projects. As a dynamic and creative person, you will coordinate the implementation of activism and youth mobilization dimensions of global and regional campaigns. You will provide advice and capacity building support to sections, structures and other Amnesty International (AI) entities across Africa: to strengthen their campaigning capacity and activist structures; to ensure activism is aligned to global and regional campaigns; to enable active participation of rights holders in campaigning; to increase the participation, engagement and leadership of young people as a contribution to growth in youth constituency for human rights impact.

An experienced campaigns professional with a passion for activism and working with the youth of Africa and across the globe. You will possess the ability to find and mobilize youth constituencies to support Amnesty’s mission at the regional and national level. In addition to being a consummate campaigner, with expansive knowledge of strategic campaigning, campaign methods and tactics, you will have the temperament and experience in building the capacity of others to develop and implement dynamic and impactful campaigns. Being an activist at heart, you will have clear understanding of what motivates members to take action, how to find out the support they need and the importance of feedback and sensitivity to different cultures and backgrounds. You will be adept at using online and offline activism techniques to achieve campaign objectives. A people’s person, you will have direct experience of coordinating networks and organizing events and the ability to use participatory approaches, methodologies and tools in campaigning and when working with others. You will be comfortable with project management responsibilities and as much at ease with being out advocating for change as you are with administrative campaign duties, a systematic approach to work in an organization, planning and managing several projects at the same time, while maintaining good budget tracking. You possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills – creative and factual with demonstrable experience and skills in facilitating training and events, coordinating workshops and meetings. Your experience has sharpened your political judgement and strategic thinking and you are comfortable and effective working with colleagues and partners based around the world, including the global north and global south. You value the work of others, can attest to your commitment to equality and diversity, and demonstrate a constructive and sensitive approach to working with others from a variety of backgrounds. Besides, you will be fluent in written and spoken English and French, readily able to demonstrate your fluency, and comfortable in communicating in both languages to staff of all levels from different departments and countries in our offices around the world.

Interviews for this post will be conducted in May 2021.

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all.

We are funded by members and people like you. We are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. No government is beyond scrutiny. No situation is beyond hope.

Few would have predicted when we started that torturers would become international outlaws. That most countries would abolish the death penalty. And seemingly untouchable dictators would be made to answer for their crimes.

What does Amnesty do?

We investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen.

We lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law.

By telling the powerful stories of the people we work with, we mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline.

We support people to claim their rights through education and training.

Where it all began

In 1961, British lawyer Peter Benenson was outraged when two Portuguese students were jailed just for raising a toast to freedom. He wrote an article in The Observer newspaper and launched a campaign that provoked an incredible response. Reprinted in newspapers across the world, his call to action sparked the idea that people everywhere can unite in solidarity for justice and freedom.

This inspiring moment didn’t just give birth to an extraordinary movement, it was the start of extraordinary social change.

After more than 50 years of groundbreaking achievements, Amnesty has been through a major transformation, adapting to dramatic changes in the world.

We have shifted from a large London base, to open regional offices in cities in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. These offices are major hubs for our investigations, campaigns and communications. The new regional offices strengthen the work of Sections who already work at the national level in more than 70 countries. We can now respond quickly to events wherever they happen, and be a powerful force for freedom and justice.

To stay one step ahead, we are also developing tools using the latest technologies. Such as a mobile phone app that acts as a personal ‘panic button’ for activists at daily risk of being arrested or detained.
