Program Overview:
CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.
Overview of Role:
CHAI is seeking an Associate, working in the East, Central, and West African region, to provide technical assistance to our global and country teams in support of our malaria diagnostic and treatment programs, and for assessment and programmatic work on improving commodity supply chains across the countries we work in including but not limited to Uganda, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Nigeria. The Associate will be a part of a team that works in close partnership with CHAI country teams, and partner organizations.
The candidate must have excellent communications skills and cultural sensitivity, as s/he will be working closely with global and country partners. The successful Associate will have strong organizational and project management skills, and will be capable of conducting rapid quantitative analysis and communicating such analysis on a regular basis in a clear and concise manner to colleagues and partners. The successful candidate will be able to function efficiently in a semi-independent setting, and thus will be a self-motivated individual capable of managing multiple tasks at once and making sound independent decisions regarding data analysis.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain strong understanding of the malaria diagnosis and treatment landscape within CHAI’s focus region and identify the highest priority opportunities to improve the quality and coverage of malaria diagnostic and treatment services offered
- Support scoping for new areas of work in malaria case management in close collaboration with CHAI’s country teams, NMCPs and other stakeholders
- Support gathering, analysing, presenting and mapping of coverage and quality of diagnostic and treatment indicators in each of CHAI’s focus countries
- Support government partners and CHAI country teams in executing strategies to achieve programmatic goals related to diagnosis and treatment, including:
- Increasing availability and access to case management services
- Developing materials for health care workers, including private providers, to improve diagnosis utilization and adherence to national guidelines;
- Exploring implementation of new diagnostic and treatment tools, as necessary.
- Support government partners and CHAI country teams in the drafting and/or updating of national guidelines related to diagnosis and treatment and quality assurance and control for medicines and diagnostics
- Support CHAI country teams in identifying and addressing supply chain management gaps
- Draft presentations and reports related for national and global teams on topics related to malaria case management and/or supply chains
- Supporting case management and/or supply chain management aspects in ongoing or planned studies led by CHAI
- Coordinate meetings and facilitate knowledge sharing between the government program and partner organizations in the region to ensure effective coordination
- Other responsibilities as neededQualifications
- Bachelor or Master’s degree plus relevant 2-3 years’ professional experience in a demanding, results-oriented environment
- Strong quantitative skills, including fluency in Excel
- Ability to create compelling, logical presentations and reports, using MS PowerPoint and MS Word
- Comfort and flexibility to work independently with a diverse set of counterparts
- Ability to work independently in remote and unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges
- Ability to travel frequently (~60% time) and extensively across sub-Saharan Africa, and to other trans-continental meetings
Advantages:
- An MPH, MS in Public Health, Epidemiology, or experience working in public health, particularly international health/health policy and management
- Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation of surveillance systems and/or public health programs
- Experience working in developing countries, particularly on health related issues
- Professional fluency in French
