The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) is a regional umbrella body that brings together 44 National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Africa. NANHRI, whose Secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya, is registered under Kenyan law as an independent legal entity and has been operational since 2007.

The Network of African NHRIs seeks to support and strengthen National Human Rights Institutions in Africa as well as to facilitate coordination and cooperation between and among as well as linking them to other key human rights actors at the regional and international level.

National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) are bodies established by governments to aid in promotion and protection of human rights within their respective jurisdictions through handling complaints and conducting investigations, research, advocacy and educational programmes in line with the Paris Principles.

About the Position:

This is a wonderful opportunity for a well-experienced fundraiser who has extensive experience and networks within the governance and human rights sectors in Africa, and possibly international donors who are aligned to advancing human rights on the continent. This is a new and exciting role to retain, acquire and report on grants from institutional donors. Working within the programmes team, the post holder will take over responsibility for maintaining strong relationships with and raising significant funds from existing donors and partners as well as development of new funding opportunities from other institutional donors

Key Responsibilities:

Works closely with Executive Director, Operations Manager, Head of Finance and NANHRI Programme Officers to develop timely programmes, high quality and competitive projects proposals and presents them to donors.

  1. Determines proposal concept by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs; studying requests for proposal (RFPs); attending strategic meetings.
  2. Coordinate with colleagues in the programmes team to compile the information required for

developing proposals and preparing donor reports for grants awarded.

  1. Meets proposal deadline by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, reviewing, and approval.
  2. Establish, build, maintain and manage relationships with key Regional, and international funders;
  3. Secure major donations through leveraging crucially important opportunities available;
  4. Research and identify new institutional funding sources for Excellent and our partners, regularly monitoring for opportunities, sharing with relevant team members and helping to

plan approaches to them.

Competence and Personal Requirements:

  1. Master’s Degree or equivalent.
  2. Understanding of human rights-based approach and other development and human rights work related to national and international policies, strategies, UN conventions and international laws.
  3. Over 10 years of working experience in development cooperation, good governance, rule of law and human rights programmes within a regional (Africa)/international/global environment.
  4. Demonstrated experience in programmatic development leading to funded programmes and growing portfolios.
  5. Strong conceptual and analytical skills and demonstrated organizational, management and fundraising skills.
  6. Knowledge and experience of cooperation with governmental and non-governmental agencies in the field of development cooperation and good governance.
  7. Conversant in project cycle management, project planning, fundraising and knowledge management. Knowledge of Regional/Global context. Knowledge/Familiarity of NANHRI’s strategic.
  8. Ability to work independently under pressure in an organized and responsive manner.
  9. Ability to identify donor intelligence for appropriate timely action
