ABOUT ONE ACRE FUND

Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms vastly more productive. We provide quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural trainings to improve harvests. We measure our success by our ability to make farmers more prosperous: On average, farmers harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

We are growing quickly. We currently serve more than 800,000 farm families in Eastern and Southern Africa, with more than 7,500 full-time staff, and we aim to serve 1 million farm families by 2020.

JOB DESCRIPTION

One Acre Fund is growing quickly, and we plan to at least quadruple our farmer impact in the next five years. One of the key strategies for driving this increase in farmer impact will be making sure that farmers have access to inputs and knowledge to grow economically and environmentally impactful trees. Growing trees can have a number of benefits for smallholder farmers; they improve total land productivity, improve soil fertility, and generally improve farmer resilience through diversified assets. Additionally, they contribute positively to local ecosystems and mitigate the effects of climate change.

One Acre Fund’s country teams have helped farmers plant millions of trees so far and plan to support the planting of hundreds of millions more over the next ten years. Our goal now is to support teams to refine their models to make them as impactful, efficient, and environmentally responsible as possible, while also significantly expanding scale and farmer access. To do this, OAF is investing in improving its technical expertise, and in translating that expertise into action. The Rotational Agroforestry Associate or Manager will be responsible for meeting internal and external stakeholder technical needs as they arise, and directly leading country teams’ agroforestry trial and implementation activities during 6 month-1 year rotational assignments.

Concretely speaking, the Rotational Agroforestry Associate or Manager will rotate through a progression of field-based postings, followed by the opportunity for a permanent posting or further rotations depending on the candidate’s interests

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the organization’s technical agroforestry expert. Technical expertise will ensure that teams are delivering the highest impact products possible in a socially and environmentally responsible fashion. As the authority on technical agroforestry matters, this role requires liaising with a large number of stakeholders, including: eight different country teams, the Agricultural Research Team, Business Development, and donors and external partners. Likely projects include: creating a Pest and Disease Management Guide; supporting country teams to develop improved trainings on planting and maintenance; and recommending diverse portfolios of trees based on Agro Ecological Zone and other context.
  • Directly support country team operations during rotational assignments to country field offices that last from six months up to one year. This role will manage a suite of agroforestry trials with a goal to: diversify species and product offerings; improve program sustainability through increased efficiency and income generation; and improve trainings, marketing, and support services. This role will then use trial results to make recommendations regarding scale, and work with country team stakeholders to execute.
  • Support organizational efforts to make agroforestry programs more efficient and effective. Likely projects for select countries include: developing business models for agroforestry products; oversee risk modeling, cost-benefit analyses and projections; and create learning platforms and systems that improve knowledge sharing across teams.

CAREER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

We have a strong culture of constant learning and we invest in developing our people. You’ll have weekly check-ins with your manager, access to mentorship and training programs, and regular feedback on your performance. We hold career reviews every six months, and set aside time to discuss your aspirations and career goals. You’ll have the opportunity to shape a growing organization and build a rewarding long-term career.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking one exceptional professional with at least 3-5 years work experience and ideally a demonstrated passion for our mission. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Significant experience working in smallholder agroforestry.
  • Strong educational background; Masters or PhD in Agroforestry or a closely related field.
  • Field experience working in smallholder farmer agroforestry.
  • A track-record of collaborating with, and communicating effectively to, a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A track-record of implementation, taking projects from strategic to operational within a relatively short amount of time.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience at work, or outside of work, enthusiasm for learning, and openness to feedback.
  • Ability to build teams and collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Language: English required in all locations. Swahili especially helpful in Tanzania.

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
