Sanaria is a biotechnology company that aims to develop and commercialize whole-sporozoite vaccines that confer high-level, long-lasting protection against Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria parasite responsible for more than 95% of malaria associated severe illness and deaths. Sanaria works to develop vaccines to prevent all human malaria, including drug resistant stands worldwide.

Sanaria, in conjunction Medical Care Development International and , are actively seeking a fulltime English/Spanish bilingual Safety Unit Chief for an international assignment in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. Study activity will begin on Bioko Island in October 2019 and the study is scheduled for initiation in January 2020 and conclusion in early 2022. This individual will be responsible for the medical care, safety, and safety reporting of 2100 participants enrolled in the double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to assess the safety and protective efficacy against malaria of PfSPZ Vaccine, the EGSPZV4 clinical trial.

Essential responsibilities:

  1. Lead the EGSPZV4 safety team in assuring research subject safety by providing high quality clinical care for adverse events and other medical conditions arising in the EGSPZV4 clinical trial, under the supervision of the study Principal Investigator and according to the directives of the study sponsor.
  2. Provide ongoing mentorship and training to medical staff, with particular focus on physicians, but to include nursing staff with respect to their clinical responsibilities and community mobilizers to the extent that they are asked to perform medical procedures such as asking about health issues, in all cases working in concert with the Medical Officers in Charge of these staff members.
  3. Working with the Principal Investigator and Study Director, support the review, quality control and accurate entry into the database of all safety data collected on case report forms during the study.
  4. Assure the prompt and complete identification, classification, reporting, and follow up of serious adverse events and other reportable events according to the clinical protocol, to the Sponsor and to IRBs, working closely with the Principal Investigator and Study Director.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  1. Board certified pediatrician or family practice physician experienced in providing outpatient and inpatient medical care including management of medical emergencies, pediatric resuscitation and intensive care.
  2. Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or equivalent.
  3. Experience in the conduct and reporting of clinical research.
  4. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English.
  5. Willingness to commit to two-year term of residency in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, as a member of an international team conducting the EGSPZV4 clinical trial.
