Position: EpiC Senior Pharmacy Specialist (Zimbabwe)

FHI 360 is seeking applications for the position of Senior Pharmacy Specialist under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funded Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project. EpiC will be implementing a community pharmacy antiretroviral therapy (ART) decentralized drug distribution model program in Zimbabwe. EpiC is a five-year global project funded by PEPFAR through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), dedicated to achieving and maintaining HIV epidemic control. The project provides strategic technical assistance and direct service delivery (DSD) to break through barriers to 95-95-95 and promote self-reliant management of national HIV programs by improving HIV case-finding, prevention, and treatment programming.

Job Description

The Senior Pharmacy Specialist (SPS) will work under the direction of the Technical Director to design, implement and manage all technical aspects of the EpiC Zimbabwe SFI project. The SPS will have the following responsibilities:

  • Provide technical and programmatic support in strengthening pharmacy systems and building pharmacists’ capacity on best practices in the provision of pharmaceutical care for ART, prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) and tuberculosis (TB), including inventory management and other related services at community and hospital pharmacies;
  • Provide technical support to implement the integration of quality care and support activities with primary focus on pharmaceutical care in HIV/AIDS, ART treatment, PMTCT of HIV/AIDS and TB in the private sector;
  • Support capacity building to the pharmacy staff to implement quality pharmaceutical services in private pharmacies and the provision of pharmaceutical care services;
  • Manage the availability and promote rational use of ARV drugs and other chronic care medicines;
  • Serve as the project focal point for provision for high quality pharmaceutical care for clients accessing care within the private sector;
  • Develop or adopt pharmaceutical best protocol, job aids, standards, etc. to ensure quality pharmaceutical HIV care for clients in the private sector;
  • Support government and health facility supply chain technical leads to coordinate and process new ART client medication orders and reorders. This includes verifying/reverifying new or refill prescriptions into the pharmacy information systems and electronic medical records (EMR);
  • Coordinate pharmacovigilance activities (adverse drug reaction reporting);
  • Implement the necessary measures to guarantee the quality of medicines in the private pharmacy;
  • Be involved in pharmacy data collection, analysis and data management activities;
  • Support provision of drug information and health education to patients and other members of the health team in the private pharmacies;
  • Train pharmacy staff on Logistic Management of HIV/AIDS Commodities (LMHC) using National Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for LMHC;
  • Coordinate the routine collection and validation of reports from field offices to guide decision making at the central level;
  • Implement, coordinate or/or participate in private pharmacy and public health facility review meetings;
  • Act as a liaison between the FHI 360 SFI Community Pharmacy project and relevant Governmental and Non-Governmental institutions;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The following are the minimum qualifications required for the position:

  • Bachelors of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree and at least 10 years relevant professional experience; MPH or MSc in Public Health or a related field will be an added advantage; Preference for candidates with experience in the delivery of comprehensive HIV/AIDS ART services (Care & Treatment, PMTCT, TB referrals, etc.);
  • Experience working in hospital and/or community pharmacy practices and familiarity with the private sector pharmaceutical market preferred;
  • At least two years of successful experience working with the Government of Zimbabwe at national, provincial, and/or district levels and familiarity with the Government of Zimbabwe pharmacy monitoring and evaluation tools;
  • HIV/AIDS Pharmaceutical management experience and ability to understand full range of issues around ART services and pharmaceutical care as it applies to HIV/AIDS; knowledge of HIV/AIDs Pharmacotherapeutics;
  • Understands, performs and demonstrates ability in ARV adherence instructions; pharmacy logistics; accountability; documentation and reporting;
  • Excellent diplomacy skills and a proven ability to establish and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with USG, host-country counterparts and representatives from other key stakeholders such as NGOs, CSOs, and the private sector;
  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, including proven ability to develop and communicate a common vision among diverse partners; and,
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Required Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Member of the Pharmaceutical Council of Zimbabwe with the annual license for practice.

The position will be based in Harare, Zimbabwe and work out of the FHI 360 office. Position is open to Zimbabwean citizens and permanent residents.
