Job Description

Management of the Shelter:

– Lead, motivate and further
the shelter staff and volunteers

– Esurance of the mental
and physical welfare of the dogs whilst at the center. This can range from
feeding, to exercise, to interaction with staff and volunteers, all with the
aim of providing as much improvement as possible

– Maintain records of all
dogs at the shelter. This should include any dog movements within the shelter
and outside of it

– Maintenance of the
medical records of the dogs at the shelter, including regular treatments, such
as anti-parasites, as well as other medical conditions. This also includes behavioral
notes acquired from the staff / volunteer diary

– Ensure that regular vet
checks are carried out on all the shelter dogs and that any medications are
properly administered and recorded

– Work with the staff and
volunteers to prepare the dogs for rehoming

– Maximize the
volunteering opportunities by ensuring that volunteers feel valued and
therefore increase their commitment – consider longer-term volunteering
opportunities to try to ensure more consistent volunteers for the project

– Oversight of the
shelter building, identifying any faults and ensuring all building and
maintenance work is carried out as efficiently and safely as possible

– Be responsible for the health
and safety of all at the shelter, implementing changes in the work systems
where required

– To keep the stock under
control (ex. food and gas)

 

Coordinate Rehomings:

– Support adopters, both
in pre-adoption through advice and carrying out checks, and post-adoption via
regular visits, maintaining records of adopters’ visits to the vet clinic etc.

– Ensure that puppies
adopted before castration are spayed/neutered on time (before they reproduce)

– Support international
adoption processes (ex: vaccination, documents)

 

Sponsored Animals

– Guarantee that
sponsored animals receive special care

– Periodically send
photos and upgrades of the animals to the sponsors.

Job Requirements

  1. Verbally fluent in
    Portuguese and English, and written fluency in at least one of those languages
  2. Knowledge of Word,
    PowerPoint and Excel

We are an organization dedicated to the care and protection of the local animal population based in the city of Mindelo, on the island of Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, situated off the West Coast of Africa. Our objective is inclusive of, but not limited to, helping the cats and dogs living on the streets, especially in the poor quarters, that are often found to be hurt, traumatized or held in appalling conditions. Simabo offers treatment to and recovery time for those animals in need of intensive care, possible victims of street accidents or from the systematic poisoning authorized by the City Council to control the canine population growth on the island. Simabo also works to increase awareness in respect of animal rights to the local population, and offering advice on the protection and preservation of endangered species in threat of extinction. Whilst the central aim of Simabo is the direct care of animals in need we also focus on the promotion and involvement of the local population in activities, offer informative meetings at schools, in operative centres or throughout cultural and scientific initiatives. Simabo has been accredited directly to specific projects through the involvement of veterinarian students from the University of Torino who can undertake their required 100 hours of rural internship here. Furthermore, Simabo is participating in the University of Camerino’s leishmania project and in the University of Torino’s scab project. At Simabo we are always looking and talent hunting for veterinarians and volunteers that would like to participate in the projects. Everyone is welcome to visit our new shelter and to help with a donation in the form of field working, financial aid, and/or by the donation of materials (collars, leashes, anti fleas, holding cages for cats, etc).
