The iShack Project is a not-for-profit, off-grid solar electricity utility which serves residents of informal settlements who do not have electricity. We are looking for an energetic, technically competent, highly efficient, and organised team-worker with good leadership skills and the authority and capacity to oversee all installation activities as Site Coordinator at multiple sites in collaboration with our Field Manager.

iShack seeks to appopiont a Site Coordinator to be based in ‘Freedom Farm and Malawi Camp’ near the Cape Town International Airport.

Employment type: Hours – 40 hours per week with possibility of working on weekends and after hours. For a duration of 1 year contract (renewable)

Remuneration: Market related

Start Date: September 2020

The purpose of this position will be to train and manage 2-3 installation teams who will install off-grid Solar Home Systems in informal settlements in Cape Town (and Stellenbosch). The Site Coordinator ensures that daily targets and quality standards are met. The Site Coordinator will also conduct daily ‘hand-over’ and ‘contract-completion’ sessions with new clients. The role is suited to someone who is very comfortable working in informal settlements every day. They should be enthusiastic and committed improve the lives of people living in informal settlements. The successful candidate will have technical competence; excellent hands-on, organisational, problem solving, multi-tasking and people skills. (In particular, the Site Coordinator must be able to communicate confidently, professionally and positively with his/her teams as well as with all clients. The role requires the ability to adapt positively to the changing needs of the project. The successful candidate will be hard-working, show initiative and have a demonstrated ability to implement and adhere to a variety of prescribed procedures and systems at a high level of quality.

Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on, day-to-day coordination of all Solar Home System installations in informal settlements according to prescribed standards and daily, weekly and monthly targets. The project’s vehicle will be available for use during office hours to transport stock and delivery of systems for installation.
  • Supervise installation teams and provide hands-on assistance in all related technical functions regarding system installations and stock management ensuring the team has all necessary resources, consumables and tools.
  • Coordinate with the Field Manager to arrange access and schedule installation jobs with clients and the teams of installers.
  • Ensure field team adherence to all documentation systems (electronic or paperwork) in collaboration with the Operations Manager
  • Full responsibility of stock control and monitoring of stock levels to ensure sufficient resources available to undertake installations.
  • Oversight of the hand-over process to all installed clients including the following:
    • Post Installation Checklist – technical and physical check of all installed system components including confirmation by the client to sign-off the installation.
    • Summary Contract Terms – explain in detail the terms of the contract and any payment plans that the client has chosen.
    • Client Guidelines – technical induction for the client to understand how all the solar home system components operate and how to get the best out of their system by managing their battery use.

Required:

  • Excellent English spoken and written communication skills;
  • Valid RSA or International Drivers Licence;
  • Experience in operations and logistics of managing high volume installations or services;
  • Experience with customer services and/or client facing duties.
  • Formal technical qualification not required but must have relevant work experience and interest in electrical and/or mechanical hand-skills;
  • Proven track record of managing a demanding workload towards achievement of daily tasks and monthly targets within a changing environment;
  • Demonstrable ability to manage a teams of workers and coordination of multiple jobs/sites efficiently without compromising quality control or deadlines;
  • Leadership skills with a proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude to swiftly resolve any unforeseen circumstances and manage personnel or deal with clientele in a professional manner.
  • Comfortable working in an informal settlement on a daily basis.
  • Preferred:
    • Fluent in isiXhosa;
    • Some experience in or understanding of the technical aspects of solar energy or other alternative energy technologies or any other technical experience;
    • An understanding of and experience with quality management systems.
    • Experience working with spreadsheets for record keeping
  • The Site Coordinator must have a valid drivers licence and no criminal record.

Location: After an initial training phase (which will be based in Stellenbosch and The Sustainability Institute), the Site Coordinator will spend most of their time in the informal settlement called ‘Freedom Farm and Malawi Camp’ near the Cape Town International Airport. When needed, the Site Coordinator will also be required to work in other sites in Stellenbosch and Cape Town.
