Shine Literacy is a nonprofit organisation that seeks to create a culture of reading in South African schools, homes, workplaces and communities, thereby improving literacy outcomes for young children from low-income communities.

Shine Literacy seeks to appoint a Social Franchise Coordinator, to be based in Cape Town.

The purpose of the position is to support and coordinate the Shine Literacy Hour model across schools in South Africa, including supervision of centre managers.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Planning

  • Contribute to ensuring that the organisation’s culture is informed by its values
  • Hold the space for organisational reflection and growth, recognising, valuing and embracing the diversity of views, backgrounds and cultures of the workforce.
  • Support the development and implementation of operational plans for programmes in area of responsibility

Partner development

  • Support the development and implementation of different franchise models
  • Undertake testing, monitoring and modify models, as required
  • Support the roll out of new partnerships, collaborations and stakeholders

Programme Support & Coordination

  • Support the Shine Social Franchise Manager through overseeing and supporting high quality implementation of the Shine Literacy Hour programme
  • Ensure compliance with operating standards across all Shine Literacy Hour programmes
  • Disseminate the Shine Operations Manual and toolkit, ensuring up-to-date information, guidelines and templates are effectively communicated to Chapter and Centre Managers
  • Undertake the Shine Literacy Hour quality assurance site visits, using Shine Literacy guidelines and tools
  • Implement systems for measuring impact and capturing learning from Shine Literacy Hour programmes, according to Shine’s monitoring and evaluation plan
  • Support, train and set up process for new Chapters and Chapter Managers
  • Implement communication mechanisms across Shine Literacy Hour programmes, undertaking efficient dissemination of information, ongoing sharing of good practice and effective peer support
  • Keep the sustainability of all Shine Literacy Hour programmes under review and provide support and advice as needed
  • Ensure that the Shine Literacy brand is properly promoted and protected by all Chapters and Centres
  • Undertake any other tasks relating to the effective running of the Shine Literacy Hour programme, including providing input into an implementation plan each year
  • Regularly travel to all Centres and Chapters located locally and nationally

Operational Management

  • Undertake supervision of the Shine Centre Managers, holding staff accountable to their individual key performance areas and goals
  • Adhere to the fair application of HR policies and procedures, undertaking all required supervisory functions
  • Contribute to a positive, safe and healthy work environment
  • Undertake mentoring, training and development as required
  • Undertake expenditure within authority, budget and Shine Literacy’s financial policies and controls
  • Undertake all administrative processes as required by Shine Literacy’s policies and procedures

Reporting

  • Support the drafting of donor (and other) reports as required, contributing to reports where necessary
  • Deliver all operational reports, as required by Shine administrative procedures and systems

Training

  • Support the Shine Social Franchise Manager in the delivery of all necessary training for new and current Chapter and Centre Managers
  • Keep the training programme for Shine Literacy Hour programmes under review, and make recommendations for changes as needed
  • Support the training team in delivering all related training

Requirements:

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or diploma
  • Five years of relevant experience with at least two years in supervisory or managerial role
  • Experience and understanding of data collection and monitoring & evaluation systems
  • Experience in training of adults
  • Experience in non-profit sector would be an advantage
  • Experience in project coordination would be an advantage
  • Valid driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle
  • Computer literacy, with high level of proficiency in all Microsoft applications
  • Literate in both written and spoken English
  • Working knowledge of Afrikaans, Xhosa or Zulu would be an advantage
  • Organisational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Comfortable developing and implementing project and monitoring & evaluation systems
  • Friendly and positive disposition, with professional demeanour
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a cohesive and supportive team
