About One Acre Fund

Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms more productive. We provide quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers homes, and agricultural training to improve harvests. We measure our success by our ability to make farmers more prosperous: On average, farmers harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

We are growing quickly. We serve more than 800,000 farm families in Eastern and Southern Africa, with more than 7,500 full-time staff, and we aim to serve 1 million farm families by 2020.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Agile testing:
  • Plan the monthly testing cycle for the QA team in addition to your tasks. Manage the Software Quality Assurance test calendar, lead in bug triaging and cross communication between clients, QA and the development team.
  • Oversee the release testing cycle, embedded assignments, and management of at least one staffer. Be the lead within the embedded teams for first level bug triaging.
  • Management:
  • Management: Directly manage one or more staffers and make progress in the professional development of said staffer(s) through documented development plans, promotion plans and Performance Development Reviews.
  • Manage one or more servers and researches/troubleshoots solutions or have a record of creating improved technical systems in Information Technology Development
  • Planning:
  • Plan release testing and testing components of each report within their embedded teams, track report automation progress and share with management.
  • Give input on future staffing decisions and departmental planning, prioritizing work and shifting tasks to ensure smooth completion of sprint and release cycle tasks.
  • Automation
  • Begin intermediate automation tasks for your projects, share knowledge through technical documentation and assist junior reports and staff on user interface recording. Strengthen reports domain knowledge of OAF tools

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with at least two years of relevant professional experience at established professional organization required when hired externally into this pay grade.

Specific qualifications include:

  • 2+ years of work or internship experience in a professional development environment.
  • Good programming skills. Proficiency with at least one major front-end JavaScript framework: Angular, React or Vue. Proficiency in at least one major back-end language: NodeJS, .NET (C#) or Java. Proficiency with either SQL or a No-SQL database.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and continuous integration is desired, but not a requirement. Automated Testing Tools (JMeter, Katalon, and Selenium preferred).
  • Strong self-manager.
  • Willingness to commit to the position for at least two years.
  • Required Language: English.

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
