  1. JOB SUMMARY:

The Nutrition Specialist for the Livelihoods for Resilience Activity will lead quality implementation of activities to reduce chronic malnutrition and improve access to nutritional support for PSNP households participating in the project in the targeted woredas of SNNPR. S/he will be responsible for building the government partners’ capacity in understanding and applying nutrition approaches, tools, and best practices. The Nutrition Specialist will be responsible for the planning and implementation of activities related to Growth through Nutrition and other similar project collaboration. S/he will use a hands-on approach that will require outstanding skills in planning and facilitation of training workshops, coaching and mentoring, and an ability to influence and facilitate change through high level interpersonal and communication skills. The Nutrition Specialist will report directly to the project manager and will work closely with the Gender Specialist and other technical specialists and project staff to ensure program quality and impact in line with the Livelihood for Resilience Activity goals and objectives at field office level.

  1. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

 Job Responsibility #1: Analysis, strategy, reporting and design (20% of time):

  • Contributes to the project’s detailed implementation plans (DIPs), at the start-up and annual reviews, to ensure the incorporation of sound nutrition behavior change activities and nutrition sensitive agriculture/livelihoods activities
  • Participates in the designs of nutrition surveys, analyzes results and writes reports in the field office
  • Conducts regular assessment and analysis of the nutrition situation in PSNP households and communities in Livelihoods for Resilience project operational areas to feed into project learning and strategy revisions

Job Responsibility #2: Capacity building and technical assistance (20% of time):

  • Tailors nutrition guidelines and training materials and approaches to the local context
  • Leads and coordinates the capacity building supports of CARE staff—and particularly Facilitators for Empowerment—in Sidama and Gedio Zones, on nutrition BCC and nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions
  • Participates in the development and facilitation of nutrition-related trainings for partner and staff development
  • With close technical support from the CCU Senior Nutrition Advisor, trains facilitators, volunteers and animators on essential nutrition actions (ENA) and mother, infant and young child feeding (MIYCF)
  • Develops and implements follow-up coaching plans to sustain staff expertise and commitment to apply new skills
  • Provide technical training on homestead gardening i.e.  keyhole/perma-gardening for DAs, government health extension workers and local leaders  and promote to  VESAs members
  • Works with the Livelihoods and Youth Specialist and the Value Chain and IGA Specialist to weave nutrition messaging into technical crop and livestock trainings and promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture
  • Trains health care providers, DAs, model women, and VESA leaders on the use and post-harvest storage of high nutrient foods (e.g. vegetable and fruits)

 Job responsibility #3: Nutrition interventions planning and implementation:

  • Develops locally appropriate male engagement strategies and community awareness campaigns to change social norms surrounding nutrition and food security
  • Works to identify role models and engage them to raise awareness about benefits of changed social norms surrounding nutrition
  • Collaborates with the Value Chain and IGA Specialist, Woreda Team Leaders, Gender Specialist, other sister project staffs, and facilitators to provide appropriate technical support to targeted households on homestead production of nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits, and conduct cooking demonstration at VESA level
  • Facilitate training on homestead gardening (Perma-garden, Key hole garden and micro-garden) for agricultural and health extension workers, team leaders, and community facilitators and project beneficiaries
  • Follows up and assists training of Facilitators for Empowerment and target households on poultry feeding and nutrition
  • Collabrate with the Value Chain and IGA Specialist promote poultry production and consumption to improve the household nutrition
  • Ensures that basic nutrition education—including discussions on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) and Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture (NSA) and  Essential Nutrition Action (ENA)—are conducted during VESA group meetings and works with the Gender Specialist to explore and address gender and social dimensions of nutrition
  • Works with the relevant government structures to facilitate nutrition-related activities and monitoring in the operational areas
  • Advises and helps promote appropriate community mobilization strategies around nutrition
  • Ensures that Livelihoods for Resilience households with pregnant and lactating women and children under two are linked to existing government mother support groups (community-based nutrition, etc.)
  • Supports active participation of targeted women and other vulnerable groups in improving household food and nutrition security

 Job Responsibility #4:  Monitoring, evaluation, learning, and networking (20% of time)

  • Collaborates with the Livelihoods for Resilience monitoring, evaluation and learning team (Learning Design and Measurement Unit) to collect periodic data to track progressive changes both in nutrition knowledge and practice
  • Together with the Learning Design and Measurement Unit, supports impact measurement and documentation of lessons learned and best practices in nutrition
  • Leads nutritional assessments in targeted woredas of SNNPR and ensures that assessment findings are properly documented
  • Documents and shares lessons/results of nutrition work and strategies in Livelihood for Resilience operational woredas
  • Keeps up to date with developments in nutrition initiatives, including best practice in-country, regionally and globally, and ensure ongoing personal development and learning
  • Establishes and maintains formal and informal communication mechanisms with Growth through Nutrition and other nutrition program staff
  • Establishes and maintains close communication with PSNP 4 staff at the regional and woreda level to ensure that Livelihoods for Resilience supports the implementation of PSNP nutrition BCC and gender and social development provisions
  • Explores and participates in nutrition task forces at the regional and local levels
  • Supports the documentation and use of project nutrition learning into evidence-based policy influence
  • Identifies, establishes and maintains productive relationships with like-minded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the region
  • Disseminates information on a regular basis regarding nutrition intervention accomplishments among stakeholders, including the government
  • Organizes and participates in cross-visits to leverage lessons and best practices on nutrition-related activities

 Job Responsibility #5: Gender Equity and Diversity related (5% of time):

  • Promotes gender equality within teams, communities and households
  • Ensures that proposals and reports make explicit reference to approaches used to address unequal gender relations; ensures that information are disaggregated by gender
  • Participates in and supports capacity building activities for staff on gender and diversity issues

Job Responsibility #6: Other activities (5% of time):

  • Performs other duties as assigned

III.           PROBLEM SOLVING (Thinking Environment)

While the incumbent will face all three levels of  problem-solving, the biggest challenges belong to category number three. The reason for creating this position is to ensure internalization and mainstreaming of nutrition work across the Livelihood For Resilience project, partners and implementation areas, both through BCC and through nutrition-sensitive agriculture. This position requires innovative thinking and the ability to think and communicate broadly and strategically.

Job Requirements

  1. A) EDUCATION/TRAINING

Required:

BSc/BA in relevant disciplines i.e. Nutrition Science, Public Health, Food Science, and other related studies

 Desired:

Professional training in applied nutrition, community nutrition or equivalent

  1. B) EXPERIENCE

Required: 4 years of work experience in:

  • Developmental related areas, conversant with adult learning and training of trainers, methodologies, practical experience in nutrition and livelihoods programming
  • Nutrition analysis (including barrier analysis) and training

 Desired:

  • NGO experience
  1. C) TECHNICAL SKILLS

Required:

  • Nutrition analysis and related skills (e.g. barrier analysis)
  • Firm belief in teamwork, gender equality, transparent and participatory management
  • Sensitivity to different aspects of diversity (cultural, religion) and sensitivity to HIV/AIDS
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies
  • Strong training/facilitation skills

 III.           CONTACTS/KEY RELATIONSHIPS

The Nutrition Specialist work is expected to build partnering/service provision relationships with partners to smoothly run nutrition activities in Livelihood for Resilience Activity implementation areas. S/he will be directly supervised by the Project Manager, and will work in close collaboration with the Senior Nutrition Advisor (CCU) and other specialists at the field office level, particularly the Gender Specialist (for nutrition BCC and referrals) and the Value Chain and IGA Specialist (for nutrition-sensitive agriculture). The Nutrition Specialist will also collaborate closely with other projects including Growth through Nutrition and Development Food Security Activities (DFSAs), as well as with PSNP 4 stakeholders.

  1. LIVING CONDITIONS AND LEVEL OF TRAVEL REQUIRED. 

 This position is based in Awassa with up to 70% travel to project operational woredas of Sidama and Gedio Zones.
