Job Title: STTA Hydrogeology Specialist

Location: Abuja – North Central/North West States with the focus in Kaduna and Plateau
Contract Term: Short Time

Position Summary

  • The STTA Hydrogeology Specialist will support the NLCB Engineering Unit and Senior Management Team with three main components of work: (1) produce scopes of work, designs and environmental monitoring of water point projects, specifically borehole drilling and photovoltaic pumping systems; (2) on-site supervision of water projects in accordance with best practices for water project design and supervision. (3) Analyze collected information, to assess and predict the impact of activities such as landfills, construction developments and mining or agriculture, on groundwater quality and resource availability
  • The Hydrogeology Specialist will be expected to travel to project locations in the North Central/North West states and be assigned assignments suitable for the STTA’s abilities during the period of performance.

Reporting & Supervision:

  • The Hydrogeology Specialist will report to the Program’s Engineer and the Deputy Chief of Party and will liaise closely with field program staff during all assignments.

Primary Responsibilities and Deliverables
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan and collect surface water or groundwater and monitor data to support projects and programs.
  • Work with local, state, and federal agencies on water resource issues.
  • Conduct watershed and stormwater studies.
  • Process meteorological and hydrologic data.
  • Prepare various maps and figures, including; contour maps of groundwater elevations, geologic structure, cross-sections, isopach, water quality, and other hydrogeologic data.
  • Install and maintain water property and water quality instrumentation.
  • Determine the nature and extent of contamination in groundwater.
  • Prepare written reports and make oral presentations.
  • Any other duties suitable to task and commensurate with ability.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • University Degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, or similar field of study.
  • 8 years’ work experience. 2 years’ specific work experience providing training or capacity building on water point and borehole development, management, and supervision.
  • Knowledge of borehole design, maintenance, and supervision. Knowledge of solar-powered borehole design and monitoring.
  • Ability to work independently, think creatively and apply problem-solving skills and provide technical supervision. Ability to technical inspect structures, recognize non-compliance and make suggestions for improvements are needed to accomplish program goals.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust priorities as necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to manage a diverse range of professional relationships essential.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English. Oral communication skills; ability to convey technical information in an understandable manner and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people in person, on the telephone and in public setting.
  • Computer and reporting skills’ the ability to use spreadsheet and word processing software and use e-mail.
