FHI 360 is seeking applications for a Technical Director – Nutrition for a potential USAID Uganda Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Activity. The objective of the activity will be to support the Government of Uganda and development partners to ensure effective leadership for and implementation of high impact maternal, newborn and child health services in Uganda. The Technical Director – Nutrition will be responsible for leading and designing strategies for effective implementation of national nutrition strategies (policies, strategies, guidelines, and standards), collaboration and coordination among key stakeholders, and enhancing technical leadership and good governance for quality health systems and services. This position will be based in Kampala, Uganda. Recruitment is contingent upon successful award of the project and the selection of the final applicant is subject to USAID approval.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for improving implementation of national policies and strategies related to nutrition.
  • Lead design and implementation of activities to increase access to and quality of health services and multisectoral activities for nutrition.
  • Ensure program activities are evidence-based, adapted to local context and reflect state-of-the-art knowledge and best practices for nutrition programming.
  • Provide strategic leadership for strengthening nutrition referral, information, and quality management systems.
  • Lead collaboration with government officials, key development partners, and other stakeholders in the design, planning, and implementation of project strategies.  
  • Work with local stakeholders to assess need for, supply of, and utilization of key equipment and ensure trainings and mentorship activities are coordinated to maximize use of available resources.
  • Ensure compliance with company and government standards.
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual work plans and progress reports in a timely fashion for submission to USAID.
  • Document and publish results and lessons learned.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of technical staff at central office and serve as a technical advisor to field level counterparts.
  • Support performance management and professional development of direct reports, including ongoing feedback, coaching, and career support.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Public Health or related field and three (3) years of professional experience managing Nutrition programs.

OR

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of professional exposure working in mid to senior management position (in addition to the below requirement of seven years);

AND

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively increasing responsibility working for successful Nutrition technical assistance programs;
  • Demonstrates expertise and experience in service quality improvement and operational research approaches;
  • Experience and expertise in managing integrated health services;
  • Experience and expertise in managing programs in across sectors beyond health;
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills;
  • Experience in successfully engaging the private sector;
  • Must have demonstrated leadership qualities, depth and breadth of management expertise and experience;
  • Experience with integration of gender and youth analysis into health projects and services; and
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral presentation skills.
