OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

In line with the global malaria technical strategy, regional malaria action plan, and the sustainable development goals ( target 3.3 ), the unit for Malaria Control and Elimination (MCE) in EMRO is aimed at to support member states to achieve the agreed upon goals and targets related to malaria and other VBDs control and elimination by 2030, to :

For malaria

  • Reduce malaria incidence by 90%
  • Reduce malaria mortality by 90%
  • Eliminate malaria in areas wherever it is feasible
  • Prevent reestablishment of malaria transmission in malaria free countries

For all VBDs

  • Reduce mortality due to vector-borne diseases globally by at least 75%
  • Reduce case incidence due to vector-borne diseases globally by at least 60%
  • Prevent epidemics of vector-borne diseases

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Provide technical guidance to member states in developing vector control strategies for malaria elimination, and to promote Integrated Vector Management approach.
  • Oversee the establishment of entomological surveillance system including monitoring susceptibility to insecticides.
  • Guide the member states to develop strategy for preparedness and response to outbreaks of malaria and other VBDs, in collaboration with the Department of Health Emergencies (WHE).
  • Coordinate collection and analysis of data and all relevant information entomological surveillance.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to member states and stakeholders to develop and implement research proposals on various aspects of entomology and vector control in collaboration with responsible units in
  • Organize the regional activities for integrated vector management, building activities in the field of entomology and vector control;
  • Monitor implementation of vector control activities in the Region and provide technical inputs for the recruitment of consultants and experts in the field of entomology and vector control.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential:

  • University degree in biology, entomology, parasitology, environmental health, public health or other relevant disciplines and master’s degree in entomology and vector control

Desirable:

  • Specific trainings in malaria control and elimination and other tropical diseases

Experience

Essential: At least 7 years of experience at the national and international levels in planning, management and implementation of vector control interventions for malaria and other VBD

Desirable: Experience of work in the field of vector control in humanitarian emergency situation

Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of malaria and other VBDs entomology, vector control and public health
  • Proven skills in vector control and entomological surveillance

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 71,332 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1498 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
