This is a unique opportunity for highly qualified and motivated fellows to engage in on the ground implementation science programming and research and tackle some of the most pressing operational and implementation science questions relevant to HIV in resource limited settings. Both the clinical and research fellows will spend three months at the Tingathe Lilongwe HQ before being deployed to their implementation districts. While at HQ, fellows will receive training and mentorship from Baylor core faculty and will have the opportunity for lectures, clinical rotations, as well as M&E practicum. Once deployed, fellows will continue to receive mentorship and guidance from core faculty as well as site level leadership.
The fellowship entails a three year commitment. The first year will focus on development of clinical, health systems, and M&E. Years 2 and 3 will focus on the development, implementation, and publication of individual projects. Fellows will need to pass formal evaluations at the end of each year to pass to the next year. There are two tracks for the fellowship: (i) clinical ii) research
1) Clinical fellowship:
The clinical fellowship is geared toward individuals with a strong clinical medicine background. Experience with HIV service delivery is strongly preferred. Fellows will gain advanced training in clinical HIV service delivery in resource limited settings as well as development and implementation of health. All fellows will be based at Ministry of Health facilities and will be involved in optimizing routine health care delivery through mentorship, education, and health systems strengthening. In addition, each fellow will develop an individual project in collaboration with the district team to support health systems improvement in the district. Exemplary projects may include development and testing of strategies and interventions to improve: access to and uptake of HIV testing services; optimal placement and timing of novel diagnostic tools for point-of-care use; retention and adherence in care amongst persons living with HIV; provider-patient relations; male involvement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services; service delivery models to optimize outcomes along the HIV cascade including peer/technology based interventions and differentiated service delivery models; psychosocial support to improve individual and programmatic outcomes; detection and management of non-communicable diseases.
2) Research fellowship:
The research track is geared toward individuals with a research oriented background. All fellows will be based at Ministry of Health facilities and will be helping to execute operations and implementation research in resource limited settings. This will include working with the research teams on the ground to ensure studies are executed efficiently and ethically, data management to ensure high quality data, creation of interim reports, as well as assisting with protocol development and statistical analysis. In addition each fellow will develop an individual operational research/implementation science project within one of the larger research studies with the aim of producing research that guides program/policy development and is disseminated more widely in a peer reviewed publication.
